Do you guys ask for some sort of deal or they offer it outright when you state you wish to cancel?
Should I approach them once I'm charged my annual fee?
Will report back later - just paid my annual fee for the Plat Charge...I hope the horse haven't bolted just yet.

I usually contact them a few weeks out from renewal. My fee is discounted through a professional association, up until a couple of years ago they would refund the fee once it was deducted from the card, but this time around it was points only.
Amex do pro-rata refund on some cards though, so you still have a chance after the fee is deducted. I think they also factor in whether you have used any of the benefits yet and the length of membership going by the conversation when I've contacted them
Using the benefits costs them money, and shows that you ARE getting some value from the card, which is why I always negotiate on the coming years fee.
I have the chance to buy my next car on Amex, but have to pay the dealers MSF. This equates to $1,900. I clearly will not earn enough points to make it worthwhile. However, as it is a Platinum card with a $1,200 annual fee, is it possible this transaction would enable me to get a really large renewal bonus ?Yes phamid, after you have been charged.. then ask for some retention in the way of points to retain the Plat Charge card [the amount of points can change]...has worked for me for years.

i will have spent just over $200,000 on the card when the renewal comes up if i put the car through.
Anyone else tried this ?
