Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

seeing as you are going to need to talk to Amex anyway about a reduction/bonus on your annual fee, you could maybe run the car purchase scenario by them? Paying $1900 in surcharge with no certainty seems like a reasonable risk.

As an aside digger11, if you are only putting through about $80k a year on the card without the car purchase, do you get decent value out of the $1200 annual fee?

Not sure how you worked out the car was $120k, but you are correct. The value of the plat card was initially the 120,000 points that i have put towards 2 flights back from Europe later this year. That plus the free Accor hotel night, the $200 credit towards a car rental and a free return Australia flight through the reserve card all make it worthwhile this year. Next year for another $1,200 with no 120,000 points is the quandry.
Maybe i should be calling Amex and saying if i buy the car they will get the $1,900 effectively from me, so i should get a free Plat. card nxt year. They can keep the difference $700 to give me some points.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Rang Amex to cancel my Amex Platinum Charge card - offered only 23K Amex MR points to retain card.

wow, is that off a $1200 annual fee or do you pay less? They gave me 36k on a $295 reserve platinum fee, 9 months ago, hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

grossed up the merchant and took it off your expected annual expenditure for the year

ahh ok, the intro offers work well but not so great the 2nd year! maybe consider letting the charge go if you aren't happy with whatever you get offered, and signing up again in future if there is another decent sign up bonus.

They can keep the difference $700 to give me some pointsworth a try, no harm in asking. but I would suspect many platinum charges have $200k or substantially more going through each year so buying a one off car isn't going to have them bending over backwards for you on the annual fee.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

I pay the full $1200. But I think it depends on how much you spend. The person I spoke to on Amex said if a peron's spend is low - there is no point offering a bonus to retain the card as it doesn't benefit Amex. The system they are on populates a field of how many points they will offer you to retain the card.

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Called up today stating I wanted to cancel and they offered me 23k of points which i took :)

Re: Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" bonus given thread.

Just called up to enquire when my card is due to renew. Ultimate Amex Qantas. I knew it was next month.
Said i was thinking about canceling because of the fee.
He first offered the lower cards, which being a club member already the pass's were of no use.
then he offered 30k points at the end. So 30k Qantas points for a phone call , Very happy with that.
And very happy with Amex service.

Called in to cancel my affiliate Platinum Edge card (annual fee $149), got offered 15k MR points (they said equivalent to taking $100 off my annual fee if I redeem it) and took it.

Do you guys think (as a general rule) 15k MR is worth using in reducing the annual fee, or should I transfer them to SQ KF or Velocity? Understand everyone has different values they associate with Amex MR points (ascent) but keen to see what others would do

My parents have been members since the 80s continuously. Annual spend on the platinum Charge is easily $300k a year. I should tell them to threaten cancellation?

I value amex points at more than 1 cent, so I would hang on to them to transfer when needed. (e.g. to give you an idea of value - its more than 20% of the points needed for a J SYD-AMS flight on SQ)

edit: also whats your annual/monthly turn over like on the card? my cards next annual fee is due in a few months and I'm trying to work out if its likely I'll get anything out of amex

Yep agree on the valuation. Am collecting Ascent for the intention of getting that coveted SQ suites on points one day!

My monthly spend on it is about $2-3k a month? Have had it since 2012 (and worth nothing I have the affiliate Platinum Edge hence the discounted annual fee). Definitely worth an ask.

Would you mind sharing your credit limit / annual spend?

I was flat out refused but had only a 4k limit and was only putting 1k/month through the card, mostly restaurants, therefore i cancelled.

Looks like I need to make a phone call...

If you cancel say halfway through an annual period - do you get a partial refund of the annual fee you paid?
