Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I cancelled the Explorer card last month. Not even a hint of interest in trying to talk me out of it.
This is the problem: if you actually talk about cancelling, they aren't legally allowed to incentivise at all under the changes in law. Not a word. What surprised me was that this was the approach taken even when I was careful to talk in terms of "assessing my priorities", "wanting to understand why I should retain the card", "not talking about cancelling", etc...

As my Platinum Edge is almost useless to me now, post-devaluation, I called up today to discuss the fact that my annual anniversary is approaching... Nothing ….
I off-loaded the Edge earlier this year when annual renewal was due. Nothing offered. Of no benefit to me any more. Still have another 2 x Amex cards to be re-assessed next year.

Edit: Even though I did not ring specifically to cancel. I find a certain Call Centre totally useless, almost to the point of trying to put words into your mouth.

I rang to discuss my Platinum Charge card last week. I was told that I would have to go though the process of cancelling the card in order to see what offer may be available to me.

This directly contradicts what I was told and my experience. Given it is NOT a credit card, they were able to check the incentive without cancelling. Try HUACA.

Agree with Daver6.

The CSO can see your offers, if any, for this card without cancelling. Were you speaking with the Philippines Call Centre by any chance?

in my case, it was for the edge credit card

first rep said, you might be able to see offers once cancelled, and restored
2nd rep: no way thats possible
3rd rep: I can cancel and see offers but there is no guarantee I can reinstate it
4th rep: yes, you can cancel, see offers and reinstate straight away

I didnt have any offers anyway

Thanks DC3 and Daver6 for the feedback. I agree they should be able to see if there is any offer for the Platinum Charge without cancelling, as this has been my previous experience. I think it was the Phillipines Call Centre. I had phoned with a query about something else to do with the card and the operator seemed inexperienced and kept putting me on call to 'check' before answering me, so I didn't necessarily believe her answer about a retention offer. I haven't bothered ringing again, but might do so later in the week.

A CSO in Sydney has told me that when speaking to an overseas Call Centre you may ask to be put through to (a CSO in) Australia.

I plan to do this next time.

Edit: This would be for normal business hours, M-F.
Thanks, I did ring during business hours, so I might try that as well.

Wow! This is actually pretty good to know! I've generally had pretty good experiences when calling Amex, but I was unaware that this can be requested. Thanks!

Sounds like they realised that people are trying their luck, and the retention offer is no longer a retention offer in practice, so decided to start stopping this practise.

I called to discuss my options with my Platinum Edge today. There were no options, so I cancelled the card.

I’m going to keep my Explorer for a few months until it’s fee is due and see what, if anything is offered then.

Same here will be cancelling both the edge and explorer in September once we return from our trip. Missus has just resigned after the 18 month period and I might as well serve my time and use a supp card under her name. Just no great value to be had with amex since the devaluation.

Hey guys, well 12 months later I am back again :)

Called up to cancel Velocity Platinum, offered 70K points to keep. Naturally for $375 i said yes as I will always use my annual flight with them! Funnily enough this was the same as last year even though I don't use this card anymore, even dropped the limit to as low as possible.

Cheers

When was your renewal date? Mine was July but if they are offering 70,000 It still might be worth an annual call.

Interesting, did you have to go through the process of actually canceling to get the retention offer?

I spoke with the Aus call center earlier this week and they were adamant that the rules have changed since the Royal Commission and they are no longer allowed to make an offer until you actually cancel the card.

It seems the airline AMEX branded cards have a good chance of getting a retention bonus. Not so much purely AMEX branded cards. Wonder if that has something to do with the fact they want more people enrolled in their FF programs/more likely to continue flying with them.

Except for the Platinum Charge card, they told me, which they said you do not need to cancel first. They tell you straight up with no cancelling dance.

Charge cards aren't affected by th newe legislation regarding Credit Cards hence no change to the cancellation process
