Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

In the same situation as the most of you ... nothing offered. Worst of all they now say they don’t refund the annual fees “pro rata” even if you haven’t used the travel credit (on amex explorer).

I wasn't aware they did in Australia though standard in UK

Cancelled Edge this week before payment due, was offered full year free ($saving $195) as 15th April was anniversary.

Still decided to cancel, no Amex card now.. :(

First time I heard that they waive the annual fee, they usually do not budge on the annual fee.

This has been my experience at all times previously, no budging on the fee as you receive a $200 credit, although the latest call this week acknowledge I had been with Amex for 4 years & they offered to waive it this year when I asked what could be offered.

Nothing offered for me on an Edge I'd had for about 4 years this morning, so went ahead and cancelled. My partner is free of her 18 months now so we may go for the Velocity Platinum, the current bonus and ongoing earn rates are pretty good compared to what else is out there.

I called and asked for the annual fee waived, they told me that the annual fee is non-negotiable and they have never waived the annual fee for any members before. I was just lol, and thinking one they lied, two the members here lied. Went ahead and canceled the cards.

No h

No harm trying. I’ve asked the same of Amex but they have never budged on the annual fee.

in my expereince, teh call centre people (philipipines in particular) just make stuff up as they go along,
its better to take everything they say with a grain of salt

if you had the energy and time you could escalate it to a supervisor, especially in one australia and demand an explanation as to why blatently false information was given to you,

but all youd get is some satfisaction and maybe 5000 points for inconveniencing you

When I called tlam, I was straight to the point advising that I like to cancel my card & they started progressing this, whilst I advised them my annual fee was charged on the 15th April, the reduction in benefits & 4 years with Amex, the lady advised we can offer to refund the fee. I quickly advised this wasn’t of interest although is there any points on offer, she advised we had to cancel the card first & then review the offers. After this no points were available although again the annual fee waiver was offered. I said No & card was confirmed cancelled.

Some data point . Received a called from Amex ( +1 number so assume from US ) to confirm the detail of additional card holder application ( for Plat Charge ) i put in 2 days ago for 5000 Bonus points . Express my concern about point devaluation .

Got offer 30K bonus points to keep the card which i happy accepted . Asked about annual fee waived or reduced they said there is something they will look at in the future .

I’ve had the ‘refund the fee’ offer, but it was just for the refund on cancelling. Not fee-free, in my case, to keep the card.

Annual fee on my QF Ultimate card appeared in my most recent statement. Called up, did the cancel and re-instate dance. 70k points coming my way. Rather chuffed with that outcome. Have had this card for about 11 years now.

Did you have to formally cancel and then reapply, or was it all done in some sort of seamless way on the spot.

The latter. You just have the card "re-instated". The whole process still generates a cancellation letter (which I've get to receive) and I did receive a noticifation on my phone that the card had been removed from Google Pay. However I could re-add it immediately. You keep the same card and number etc.

As my Platinum Edge is almost useless to me now, post-devaluation, I called up today to discuss the fact that my annual anniversary is approaching... Nothing. They were happy to downgrade me to another points-earning card with no/lower fee. They wouldn't negotiate on anything else. "Australian law means I'm not allowed to offer incentives to retain the card", even when I said I was just assessing my options and not wanting to cancel.

Yes the Plat Edge feels pretty close to useless now (ie, just taking up space in my wallet for relatively minimal extra points per year over say Plat Charge)

I cancelled the Explorer card last month. Not even a hint of interest in trying to talk me out of it. Transferred what I could of the credit limit over to my QF Ult card.

Now down to three Amex cards with the Plat doing most of the heavy lifting that the explorer once did.
