Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Just did the dance with a customer service rep. She very quickly quoted the "Australian rules" with regard to credit cards and retention offers. Gave up after a few mins of probing.

Sad

you need to cancel the card, then re-instate

That was my experience too. I believe you can re-instate a credit card as long as it's on the same call. Once, you've hung up, you have to re-apply to get it back.

Charge cards seem to be a different regime - can just ask for it without having to do the cancel and reinstate dance.

Only if you hold charge card. If you hold the credit card and once it is canceled, you have to re-apply, can’t reinstate.

This is factually incorrect. With a credit card you can do precisely this. With a charge card, there is no need to go through the cancellation dance as they can offer retention bonuses without the dance.

From what I have seen in this thread and in other places as well as from my own experience, this definitley used to be the case. But I have seen multiple reports of this now being refused.

Re charge card retention offer - really. Thats good news thanks

I've been able to cancel and reinstate Qantas Amex Ultimate credit card on the same call but this was back in late 2020.

I believe charge cards are excluded from the credit card regulations that were introduced a few years ago that require a provider to cancel the card immediately once the customer asks without offering retention bonuses etc, hence no cancel dance required for charge products.

Suspect they've cracked down or at least my account is less fancy now I don't have any money flowing through it - as normally they'd be up for it. I tried twice too and both agents said the same thing. YMMV but this is a different one for me.

My annual fee hit a week ago so just called up and was offered 50k points to stay. I also had the spend 4k and get 40k bonus points by 30th April so factored that in deciding to keep the card for another year.

Hello, excuse the possible newbie question but if I cancel my Qantas Ultimate Amex will I lose points not already transferred to QF?
