Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

I'm currently chatting to cust service on the app - and they're point blank restating the 2019 law change.

Similarly, they are now saying that they can't re-instate cards, you'd need to re-apply again for a card (which is a new one for me)

Maybe this is all directed at me personally, given I currently reside in Singapore and only have bitty amounts of transactions through both my plat cards...

Perhaps Amex have got in trouble for their process or been advised by their legal team that the dance isn't as legal as they thought it was.

Also a very true fact !

The fact that they've all now quoted the same bit of legislation to me, makes me think people got their knuckles rapped and they're all playing it super safe.

Funnily enough I just asked the person on the phone then - can I reinstate and she said yes, within 60 days they'll just re-up the charge card.

Food for thought (and I guess I just need to cancel the damn thing lol)

Did they say anything about the credit card? I imagine it’s still definitely a new application for a credit card?

Yeah, I believe it's a new application for a credit card, but that is fairly inconsistently applied I imagine, even here amongst us.

My Explorer is coming up for renewal and a long online chat didn't even yield the initiative to suggest a downgrade if I wasn't happy with the value of the card as is. Quite surprising. If I hadn't proposed it myself, I'd have been on the cancellation path.

Does that mean that it’s a keeper, or not?

I've got another 5 days to decide. Really in two minds. Got almost none of the "benefits" of the card in the last untravelling, locked down year. The downgrade to $0 Essentials card or straight cancellation are being contemplated.

Cancel then report back on what their reaction was #selfish 😅😅😅

What's the point of downgrading? Unless you reeeaaally value the travel credit and AmEx lounge invites as $0. Well the lounge invites are currently worth that.

My 2 cents worth … if it’s valueless and the only reason you’d keep it is if it’s nil AF, then I’d cancel and start the 18 month clock again. You have plenty of time to think about it. Make sure you have a backup MC or Visa.

Amex will have made a judgement on past retention incentives and decided not to continue them. I speak for myself but I’m sure others have done the same and called to threaten to cancel with no intention of following through with it. They’re calling our bluff now.

I have two travel credits (as the result of Covid-cancelled refunds) which don't expire for quite a few months yet. I lose them if I downgrade or cancel. Apparently, if you renew the existing card and then use the existing credits (before expiry, naturally) and then cancel without using any new credits, the annual fee will be refunded.

@aspro2 I meant that downgrading to a fee free card with nowt benefits other than statement credits (those are discussed along with the Amex lounge invites in detail in the latest "Big Whoop" podcast ) would have the same effect as keeping a card with a net zero financial position. Neither card costs you anything. However if you're overloaded with travel credits that are difficult for you to use or have no value, then cancelling maybe the the way to go. Only consideration, in the absence of retaining bonuses, is whether it's worth keeping any Amex for the statement credits.

Yep, good points 👍

My annual fee hit a week ago so just called up and was offered 50k points to stay. I also had the spend 4k and get 40k bonus points by 30th April so factored that in deciding to keep the card for another year.
Just in addition to this I thought I'd mention that I also called a couple of weeks before the annual fee hit and was offered 40k.
50k was offered and accepted a week after the annual fee hit.

What do you say to them ms1? I need to call up this week. doubt I'll get anything though. Never gotten any retention bonus on my plat ever..
