Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Have anyone being rewarded with retention points for using the card when calling for cancellation.
I know it used to be the opposition reason for retention points

Are you guys transferring your points away before you initiate the cancellation request for those who only have 1 card with Amex? My understanding was that you forfeit your points if you close your only card with Amex (not sure about the 30 days turnaround period to reinstate it).
Nope. I had around about a million points a few of the times I called. Didn't seem to matter to them. Remember they want to keep you as a customer... The long tail of getting someone new vs keeping you is... Unpleasant :)

Adding a datapoint: Explorer, held since 2016. Averaging ~$5-8k monthly spend. Called up, said I was thinking of cancelling, mentioned the recent devaluations and said I was interested in anything they could offer to reinstate. After a very, very long time on hold I was offered... nothing. Zilch. Zip. Nada. So that's it: card cancelled.

Maybe I should have tried to HUCA, but I'm not too fussed. My main objective in holding this card was collecting SQ miles, and since I've just transferred all my MR points out pre-deval, and the ongoing earn rate is no longer significantly better than non-AMEX cards, I figure I'm better off with this off my credit limit to maximise churning opportunities. I'll reassess in 18 months when I'm a "new customer" again...

I rang up to cancel the plat charge yesterday. Told them the annual fee was too high they said i could get a gold charge card. I said dont want it. Spent roughly $100k per annum. No points asked for or offerred to stay. Didint bother me as i had swept all my points out in readyness of cancellation so i can start the clock before i am eligible for a sign up bonus again.

I jumped on the online chat and said I wanted to cancel my explorer back in September. I think they asked why and I said I don’t use it and I might have mentioned looking for other signup bonuses. Was very quickly offered 120k Amex points, received in a few days, transferred to Avios for 60k and then cancelled this week before renewal using the site cancellation link without interacting with anyone. Had the card for a bunch of years.

that's a good move. 120k bonus points - sweet deal :)

5 min phone call to cancel the Amex plat and I was offered 70k points, not as much as I expected given my spend over the past 12 months is close to $500K :(

Points were offered without having to cancel my card, but was highly encouraged to call back closer to when my annual fee ticks over, as that was in June :(

It's similar to the points being offered most of the card members ( roughly in the range of 70k-100k) but not sure if there is any correlation to card spend on points being offered.

My annual fee will be hitting this month. Let's see what they will offer me to keep me spending. The last time I was only offered 20K,

Was is in the last six months ? Recently they have been offering 70k-100k for various card types. I have been given bonus in the range of 80K-100K on various cards last month.

YMMV

Another data point (Explorer Card - about $100k a year) - Called to cancel, asked for retention points, as expected was told they weren't allowed to offer any. Specifically mentioned the Krisflyer devaluation and went ahead with the cancellation. Was then offered to transfer to a fee free card instead, no points available. Reinstated the card.

Oh well worth a try. Agent seemed very familiar with the process.

Is that documented anywhere? I can't find it in the card T&Cs

I am not sure if I can find a link but I was told this when I was in the process of cancelling my charge card ; its a different story that I ended up retaining the card.
