AMEX not accepted or surcharge

I didn't know eateries accepted Paypal Freddy....I don't get around much. Are you saying they generally do or don't have a surcharge on using it as method of payment?

Not all do but on the app itll list or show on a map the places that do accept it.

In my area its showing a dozen or so restaurants, takeaway and coffee shops.

I cant pay Amex at my fave indian place..but I can pay via paypal at what appear to be the same prices as on their physical menu.

So may be a decent way to circumvent either a surcharge or non acceptance of Amex if places you frequent are on there

Recharged (Sydney) Opal Cards with a credit card and got slugged 2% ($0.80c)

Not sure what the merchant fee is for this particular retailer but I can sympathise when the merchant only makes 2% including GST on Opal.

I saw at Woolworths Town Hall they had signs up for Opal recharge. Could be keen for 3pts/$ and assume no fees/surcharge.

I just switched to opal from paper based tickets and bought my cards and recharge at Woolies Metcenter sydney. No surcharge and used my platinum edge card. No direct debit link up for me for the foreseeable future with triple points at Woolies.

Guess Woolies can absorb the low margins given their merchant fee would be better than a small operator and they handle so much volume (also gets people in the store to buy higher margin goods).

I visited the checkout at the end I don't know about self serve. Probably not for self serve given they'll need an opal reader to load the credit you've just purchased.

Pancake Manor in Brisbane now has a 2% surcharge for Amex, but none for Diners as apparently they only get around "one Diners a month"... so if you have a Diners card, use that instead!

Hmm thats pretty strange. I've certainly bumped into this at franchised Caltex petrol stations but I've never (yet!) seen it at the woolies co-brand stations - yikes! I'd have thought this would be controlled at the corporate level, sort of assumed it would be one in all in rather than store by store.

As zzyss says, I'd report it, and to Caltex/Woolies as well, not only to Amex - sounds a bit fishy to me.

Repco Kellyville NSW said Amex can't be used on any purchase under $30..
Think I'm going to buy my automotive products from supercheap & autobahn who don't have any issue taking Amex.

Caltex/Woollies @ Broken Hill also charge for using AMEX.
Used my Citi Signature with no surcharge.

Just had a Woolies "convenience" store open at Central. Brilliant imo, cheaper than the convenience stores, fresh coffee and do brekky/lunch rolls as well as all of their prepackaged sandwiches.

Amex acceptance and 3ppd. Its not huge points but 30-50 extra per day 5 days a week should add up.

As a bonus the coffee is cheaper and better (subject to opinion) than all the joints at the station...if you have an office nearby do the coffee runs $3.50 for a large coffee or $10 for 4.

My local has started that as well. Signs up on every bowser and at the cashier. Got away with not paying it as I didn't show the Amex until after the transaction had gone to the eftpos terminal.

May have to get a Amex Plat Edge and pay with WISH cards from now on.

Info was ALL Caltex outlets - I did specifically ask Woolies Caltex - again his response ALL Caltex outlets - the one I was in Cnr Charman Rd and Park Rd Cheltenham. Have never charged before but will be from Jan 1 - hope some are still fee free - guess time will tell.

Visa will be fee free so Select will get a run at servo - first time ever - will also be emailing Westpac to advise their bonus pship with Caltex now useless.
