That is my experience. I have done a "Bait & Switch" at the counter previously.....

JB-HiFi: How will you be paying sir.......

ME: MasterCard (Flash Card) & then a quick switch to Amex.....

None the wiser...

Alternatively, You can buy JB-HiFi Vouchers Surcharge Free @ Woolworths....

Nice one, I used to do that at McDonald's all the time and just tell them 'eftpos' and then swipe the Amex - no one ever twigged

Does your Mcdonalds have a surcharge or something? Must be the franchised ones.

They werent taking Amex at all for awhile a few years back but didnt both to block it on their terminals

annoyed @ Rydges hotel sydney airport . 3.3% for Amex, 1.5 for others. pathetic

There are so many places/organisations that do not accept Amex I'm over it.
Just hand over my Citi Signature Visa.

Interesting. That has not been my experience.

Based on the last month, I've used Amex for about 85% of the value of my transactions.

Probably could push that up to 90-95% but I often use paywave for very small purchases.

All of my suppliers except 2, only 1 of 4 councils that I pay rates to, passport office, 2 water suppliers, Telstra unless via paypal, motor rego, some of the local small shops and these are just off the top of my head.

Can you get around some of those bills using Postbillpay?

Not at the Post Office but have not checked on line. Must admit that I don't usually pay bills on line but that's another story.

I can also add the following where Amex is not accepted by those I deal with:
Doctor, dentist, physio, chemist, specialist. And no, I'm not going to change doctor etc.

It certainly does depend a lot on the whims of your local service providers. I've noticed big differences in acceptance between say MEL versus SYD and PER versus anywhere. Strangely I had a lot of trouble using Amex in SYD. In PER its usually not a problem at all.

My dentist and pharmac_ both take Amex, my doc doesn't, petrol stations I use all do (no surcharge), supermarket, hardware, car servicing, my favourite cafes and restaurants. Can't complain overall. Its a bit of a bugger that insurance/government/telco's are so poorly received though - big surcharges usually and only 50% points earn from the Amex side.

Amex's higher fees are what funds the better earn for Amex spend be it amex issued or bank issued amex.

It's a double edged sword we want the higher earn and slowly merchants are making us pay for the rewards which may make rewards less relevant over time.

Noticed that Hungry Jacks, Heatherton (Melbourne suburb) does not take Amex! I thought all Hungry Jacks took Amex. Lost my business.

Just received my renewal notice for my rego.

There is no mention that I can pay by postbillpay. However there is a Aus post symbol and a barcode indicating that I can pay instore at the post office but only with Mastercard or Visa.
The first three numbers is the biller's code, which is 374. If you add a zero that is the code you use at the postbillpay website. However 0374 does not allow you to pay online.

So I the checked online payment methods for vicroads that you can do with postbillpay.

As you can see in the image above, there is one VicRoads Registration Renewal that still allows payment via postbillpay.com.au and thus paypal.

Intrigued by this I looked back on some old rego renewal letters and found one with the option of payment by postbillpay?

The code was different. So I checked the code with postbillpay and it indicated it was "VicRoads - Registration Renewal". Mmmm

I did a dummy payment but did not go through with it but it seems I could may be pay my rego with paypal and thus Amex.

I just wonder if my payment will go through or be allowed?

Rego is up renewal. Hopefully I will be able to pay again via paypal and thus Amex.
