AMEX not accepted or surcharge

DEFT do, they just charge an unreasonable surcharge.

Yes, that's right. That's why Amex's response was so amusing. It's like they didn't even check anything, just sent an auto reply. If they had truly looked into it they wouldn't have replied with "sorry deft don't accept Amex"

Indeed. Same as the response I got. I already know that Everyday Gift Cards don't take Amex, but they used to and all the Woolworths Group stores do so why has Everyday Gift Cards stopped.

At times like this, a computer is not clever enough to formulate the response and intervention by an actual human being is required.

With the health insurance increase deadline approaching, I thought I'd prepay 12 months. Previously, I had monthly instalments direct debited to my Amex CC and have only just realised that I have been getting only half a point per dollar  I managed to get 1pt/$ using PayPal via Post Billpay.

One of the advantages of a bank Amex. Paypal is particularly good for Business Accelerator to get the full 2pts

A few 'little victories' this week – the Salsa's and Gloria Jean's at my local Westfield now both take AMEX.

Also had to place a stationary order online with a small company, and while they didn't take AMEX, they took Paypal which these days means AMEX.

Small fish but it all adds up. :)

Weren't the ACCC meant to be cracking down on credit card fee rorts? Is there a way to report it to them. I just stayed at Rydges in Canberra and they tried to hit me up for 3.5% for amex or nothing for MC. A total joke for a large hotel.

Just booked for lunch at Rockpool in Sydney next week.1.65% surcharge for all cards. Have multiple sites so not a small merchant. Imagine their merchant rate is better than this & have inflated it for Amex & Diners.

I'll be using my Amex Velocity Platinum at 3ppd for restaurant spend. Looks like surcharges are here to stay best to consider value of the point earn vs surcharge - era of the free kick might be coming to an end.

Same at rydges sydney airport. Absolutely disgusting!

Restaurants are hit with the highest merchant fees with Amex so they are probably paying about 1.8% for Amex and about 1.4% for others

When faced with a 1.8% on every card I use a 1.5 points/ Miles Amex branded card. No one likes getting hit with a surcharge.

I submitted a report for Everyday Gift Cards since they have stopped accepting Amex, despite all of the Woolies Group stores accepting it.

When did they stop taking Amex :( ?

I used them in around January and it was fine, combined with a 7.5% off gift card special :)

All hotel chains surcharge. Agree that it is a disgrace considering the size of their businesses and much they charge for everything to start off with.

All surcharge in OZ? Cannot for the life of me ever remember a surcharge o/s - others?

Accor hotels surcharge 1.5% across the globe, but that's for all credit card transactions, not just AMEX...
Rarely do I stay any Accor hotel - couple of Mercures in Germsny last 2 years but that's all - no surcharge for Citi Select either occasion.

Yep I gathered that you meant all cards - but still cannot remember being charged a surcharge anywhere.

I can't remember being hit with a surcharge for any cards in SE Asia.

Hong Kong recently though I noticed an increasing prevalence of surcharges for a lot of CC transactions, not only Amex, though at the same time there was a weird practise of giving 10 or even 20% discounts on things (electronics, clothes, etc) if you use a certain brand of CC (Citi in my case).

I think a lot of this has to do with local culture (wherever you are) and level of retail competition. In Australia, when compared to many places, Central/SE Asia is my experience, there is very little competition in virtually any market you'd like to mention and probably riding on the back of that we have a group tendency to just accept whatever dogfood is served to us - because quite often there is little alternative.

I don't totally begrudge a fair surcharge. But 3.5% for a hotel is just blatant profiteering. There's no way amex charge them that much over Visa/MC
