the Amex Platinum, which currently offers 80,000 bonus points.

According to the website, the 80,000 award points will convert to 60,000 Qantas FF points.
There is an AMEX Platinum "Charge" Card which converts to QFF at 1:1 and an AMEX Platinum Reserve/Edge "Credit" Cards which does not convert to QFF.

I see where your confusion is:
  • LIMITED TIME OFFER: 80,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points[SUP]22[/SUP] when you spend $500 on your Card in the first 2 months of Card membership - that's enough for a Qantas return Classic Award flight from Sydney to Singapore[SUP]23[/SUP], (60,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points plus $410.14 in surcharges, fees and taxes), or $800 worth of travel which you can spend with Platinum Travel ...

Really?? I claimed only a month ago, was an award flight so there was no cost.. Was no issue claiming..

That's good to know. There was a bit of eyebrow raising at the do about te $100 spend.

I'm mainly interested in the insurance because after 4 years of work travel I found out the company policy only covers medical expenses (found out the hard way when I left a $350 pair of ray bans on a train in Oslo :( )

thanks for the replies guys.

we were told at the AFF do that you had to spend at $100 on the actual card (even the charge card) towards the trip for the insurance to qualify, but that's not what is implied on the website.

As I said at the time, Luisa is wrong. I have the Ts and Cs in front of me. You get travel insurance just by being a Plat charge card holder; don't need to spend anything to qualify!

Thanks Tony.

With the 80K bonus signup points, and free return flight per year it's a no brainer (at least for the first year).

Two questions I have that you might be able to answer:

1. Do you earn SCs/Points on the free flight?
2. Do you have to pay for a trip with the card to be covered by the travel insurance? The T&Cs provide a link to a website with the insurance details, but you have to be a registered Amex user to access the site
Shoot me a PM with your email address Andrew, and I will send you the Ts and Cs. edit to add: The Ts and Cs on the website is dated August 2010 which is the one I have in front of me.

I was told to spend on my plat card to claim back but that was it.

That's my understanding that purchases eg to replace lost / delayed bags need to made on the AMEX charge card.

Cheers mate, that policy is actually much better than I expected. I will definitely be applying for this card.

Don't forget to see conditions, the FF points don't arrive for 8/10 weeks after joining.

I have just applied Amex Plat Charge card with 80K bonus on Sunday night and received the card today!

I have some questions though:

- Can I apply the free Platinum Reserve Credit card with the 35K bonus, then claim back on annual fee given that I should get it for free with Amex Plat Charge card? Or they will send me the free Plat Reserve card automatically?

- How long does the SPG Gold status come through after applying say tomorrow? I have a trip in mid Dec and want to use this if possible.

You either get a free Reserve....

OR you pay the yearly Fee if you want the 35K of points.

There is no free Platinum Reserve Credit card with a 35K bonus.

You have to apply using the special form in the Membership Pack they set to you. See rear of booklet. The form is also online in the Plat section.

Are all your salaries over $100k? :D

Also are any of you guys having the plat charge + plat edge + plat reserve? :D
