amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Suggestion for forum - should '- May 2015' be removed from this thread title to just make it an ongoing generic Amex Plat benefits query thread?

OK to my May 2019 query - any experiences at all where a Supp Cardholder travelling alone has used their card to Access VA Lounge and been subsequently pulled up / sanctioned? (Access via Plat Card technically restricted to Primary Cardholder + 1 Guest travelling together only). TIA
No issues at domestic lounges at any time with any of my supps. Only issue I had when I was a supp charge holder was in HKG Centurion lounge - on entry they scanned the card, questioned me on "who's account this was" and after explaining (that I was good friends with the account holder), they let me in.

I think supplementary card holders of the platinum charge officially have access to the centurion lounge.

Don’t think HKG Centurion lounge cares about supps. My old man uses my supps there couple of times a month and no one bat an eyelid at him or questioned if he’s a supp not basic cardholder.

I've been thinking about getting the Platinum Charge card but had a question I can't seem to find a solid answer for on the website. The Express Cash option, for using the card to withdraw cash from an ATM through direct debiting your bank account. Is there a fee associated with using that?
Also, what have people's experiences been using the new metal card with an ATM?

Is there an Express Cash option? I actually couldn't find any information about it. Would you mind sharing me the where you find that?

Sure, from the front page under Important Links there's a link to the ATM locator:
And on the Manage Your Credit Card page
If you scroll down to Useful Forms and Documents there's a link to the Express Cash signup form

Right, I think I found some info for you as well.
There was a thread here in 2010.
They believe the fee is 1.25% ~3%.
Also I found this on Amex latin American
They state the fee would be 3%.

There is definitely a fee associated. I guess I'll just do cashout using other cards.

Thanks for all the details. I never know AMEX can do this. This is so convenient that I carry one less card.

I will fill the form and send it to AMEX. Will let you know the experience once everything is setup.

Just called Amex, was been told there is no charge/fee for Express Cash.
That's good to know. I was figuring I could use it as my ATM card when I need cash and it'll be one less card to carry in my wallet. I hardly ever use it these days.

Was having a bit of a poke around in some of the benefits tonight and discovered that through an indirect route you can get KrisFlyer Silver status from the Platinum Charge card.

Amex Platinum Charge gives you Jade status with Shangri La's Golden Circle program. You can then use the Jade status to get Silver status on KrisFlyer straight away and access to a Gold status challenge where you just need to fly three flights on SQ or MI within four months.
Details here:

One thing that is unclear to me is the Krisflyer gold challenge. Once you have attain gold after three sq flights. Do you maintain gold for the duration you hold the charge card or the normal sq rules apply to maintain gold.

1yr then you need to meet the normal SQ terms

Make sure the Silver fast track actually works. It never did for me.
