amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

AFF members are welcome to discuss this card in this thread.

Have done a quick tour of this thread and also the Amex page but can't find the answer. I have a Plat Charge Card (also have an Amex Explorer linked to the same account). I read on a couple of the blogs that you can add a complimentary Amex Reserve card and get the 400$+ credit with no Annual fee as a Platinum Charge card holder. Is this still the case? I tried logging in online and selecting the card but it said 'You are already enjoying the benefits of the card'. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Suggest just call amex as the amex plat reserve is still a perk of plat card as you've described (Unless you have another free card attached to the card, as I believe some have) - u can also get extra pp account with 2 entries per year

I had this exact problem. It's a quirk of their system, the Explorer and the Reserve are the same card in the back end. When I called up she simply removed the Explorer from my online account, I signed up for the Reserve and she added the Explorer back the next day. Very quick and easy, they're well aware of this issue.

Someone may be able to provide the link or pdf but all you need to do is call them and request it. They'll send you the right forms.

I called Amex customer service number for Platinum Charge card & was able to apply & secure Amex Reserve Card online..Fairly straight forward experience. There is nil charge for the card & yes a $400 annual statement travel credit in addition to annual travel credit available for Platinum Charge card. These travel credits are on a use it or loose it basis. No experience with Amex explorer.
Benefit (4)..Travel Credit Values have increased since the article was published in Jan,2018 but benefits currently available

I know that Accor Plus can be only provided to one card member - but does it have to be the primary one?

Thanks SJC, I have received my AC card today thanks to your application form.

I just received an AC card yesterday.

Long story short, I've requested one 3 times over the last year, each time they said a form will show up in the post within the next two weeks. After the 3rd time of it not arriving I lodged a complaint and they e-mailed me the form within an hour.

Attached is a copy of the form (I'm not sure if any of the codes below are account specific, but can't hurt to give it a try.
Once completed upload through the online services section by going to the account tab and then selecting document upload.

Good luck!

Can I ask ...are you now able to switch between all 3 cards in your online account? i.e. Plat, Explorer and Reserve? When you go to the Travel site do you have the dropdown with 3 credits appearing like below?

Are supplementary card holders unable to search with the FHR tool? The Ms seem to be having issues with it.

Yes, that has been my experience. (I made my wife the primary for referral bonus purposes but I arrange most of our travel and hack the benefits more thoroughly.) I usually just log-in as the primary to book FHR. Or (if I remember the terms I read correctly) they'll book for a supplementary by phone, although it's obviously much easier to research options online.

No, what I ended up with in the Travel interface was that when I would log in I'd be asked to select an 'online account' one of which contained my Platinum Card, Reserve and Edge and the other of which just contained my Explorer. Then I'd get the interface you're seeing there. This quirk only seemed to apply to the Travel portal, not everywhere else and all the cards showed up in the mobile app.
After I got the Reserve I just got rid of the Explorer (didn't see the point in keeping it except that the card has a nicer design) and then everything returned to normal.

Aren't FHR benefits only available to the main card?

Seeing as supp holders can call the platinum travel service line, I don't see why they shouldn't be able to access the online search.

Don't think the T&Cs specific primary card holder either:
