amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Work colleague used this recently. To get to gold, its sector based. So a trip from Australia to Asia with a transit in Singapore did it for him.

So tried the lifestyle option for the first time, wanted to book a restaurant at very short notice (2hrs), had no luck, tried another no luck either.

They said they partner with some restaurants.. is this list public, anyone have any ideas?

When you are logged in, there was a section of the site where you could pull up all the restaurants that Amex have a relationship with. At some, they have a reserved table which can be booked for the same day so long as you call up before 10 or maybe 11am.

I think maybe here: explore

If that's the list Sydney has twice as many places as Melbourne, which has over 7 times the number of the next city in the list.

T&C suggest, among other things: The reserved table benefit is limited to one (1) table for up to four (4) people or two (2) tables for up to two (2) people until approx. 10 am daily. Reservations are based on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to availability.

can amex charge holders use the premium entry to the Sydney domestic virgin lounge (without any virgin status mind you)?

Hi All, just got the platinum charge card, but want to use one card as business card. read online you can get additional card, rang them up and said they have temporarily stopped the ability to do this. Shoudl i just request another supp card with a different name?

Yeah I'd say yes. It's so much easier to keep separate.i do have an additional card, had it a year now

A year ago it was me, 4 supps and AC card.
Total 6 cards, now I think the max is 5

Use the 'my card is broken' option. Your supposedly broken card will remain active until its expiry and have no issues with manually enrolled offers too.

I just received an AC card yesterday.

Long story short, I've requested one 3 times over the last year, each time they said a form will show up in the post within the next two weeks. After the 3rd time of it not arriving I lodged a complaint and they e-mailed me the form within an hour.

Attached is a copy of the form (I'm not sure if any of the codes below are account specific, but can't hurt to give it a try.
Once completed upload through the online services section by going to the account tab and then selecting document upload.

Good luck!

Is anyone else having issues switching between card accounts on the Amex Travel website? I no longer have the option to change between my Explorer and Platinum Card anymore.

On the top right, it shows my Platinum Card but the points balance is from my Explorer Card instead. I also don't see the International Airline Program anymore when looking for Business Class flights on the site.

To do this, you need to create a seperate online account login for your AC/supp card. This seperate online account will only show transactions made by your AC card and not anything put on your main or any other supps
