amex-explorer-card-art.pngWhy we like the American Express Platinum Card

Packed full of travel perks, the American Express Platinum Card is one of the best publicly-available cards in Australia for frequent flyers.

With a $1,450 annual fee, this metal card is not for everyone. But the return on investment for the high annual fee is strong, as it comes with a lot of useful benefits! This includes an annual travel credit, dining credits and unlimited access to Virgin Australia, Delta, Lufthansa, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium and Amex Centurion airport lounges.

There are also some great hotel perks including a free annual hotel night, Accor Plus membership, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits and complimentary elite status with Hilton, Marriott and Radisson.

For points collectors, this is one of the most lucrative cards available in Australia. You’ll earn 2.25 Amex Membership Rewards Ascent Premium points per $1 spent on eligible transactions. Points transfer to most frequent flyer programs at a 2:1 rate, although there are some exceptions (e.g. it's 3:1 to KrisFlyer and Emirates).

You can convert your Amex points to around 12 airlines including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Etihad! Plus, you can transfer points to two hotel loyalty programs for even more redemption possibilities.

To sweeten the deal, new cardholders who apply by 28 January 2025 can also earn 150,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when spending at least $5,000 on the card within 3 months of approval. See our card guide for the full details:

Is it because the Amex travel portal use to give 1ppd for booking on there?
That bonus must have expired.

Suggestion for forum - should '- May 2015' be removed from this thread title to just make it an ongoing generic Amex Plat benefits query thread?

OK to my May 2019 query - any experiences at all where a Supp Cardholder travelling alone has used their card to Access VA Lounge and been subsequently pulled up / sanctioned? (Access via Plat Card technically restricted to Primary Cardholder + 1 Guest travelling together only). TIA

not first hand, but 2 friends have reported no issues with supp going into VA lounge

Haven't tried yet, but the supp card is no different than the primary. doubt the VA lounge staff know it's supp

Do they scan the card on entry or do you just show it to them?

they do something on their computer. not scan though
I understand they probably wouldn't have time to track you on the spot but I thought AMEX would pick it up in their reconciliation process - I have Supp holders who have used it - best to just shut up I guess - I might just delete previous post too.

RE: VA access

I got asked once “With such long expiry dates on the card, what do they do if you don’t pay the fee, make you send it back?”

She was implying i would have lounge access long after i stopped paying fees.

I took that to mean that there was no online checking happening, they just confirm it has not expired and matches the name on your booking.

No problems or charges from one of my supps who has used without me.
I also understand it's not an advertised benefit of overseas-issued Plat cards but thye have no problems entering

I take it that the Sup Holder has not volunteered any information that would cause being pulled up …… ?

No not at all - but surely VA don’t supply access free of charge? Surely AMEX do a reconciliation ASPIT? Or maybe they don’t?
