Amex platinum Charge annual fee increase

Have read all of the previous posts, good info & thanks.
I'd like to ask the following two questions, if for no other reason than to put my mind to rest.

What are people being charge for Platinum Amex elsewhere in the world - I seem to recall several years ago that Singaporeans were being charged $300 US p/a.
(Wondering if this is just not another example where Australian's are being charged premium prices.)

Secondly, is this an opportunity for AFF members en bloc to flex some collective muscle ie what would AMEX's response be to a group getting up on its hind legs?

I'm watching with interest though my renewal is not until March.

Interesting concept... My renewal is up in January and, right now, I'm hard pushed to justify keeping the account with a $1,200 annual fee. I, too, am interested to see the "potential" weight here... ;)

Folks,

My card is up for renewal in March 2014.
Am thinking the following...

Would still love to get feedback from those AFF members that know what AMEX Platinum renewal fees cost in other countries, this might add weight to our position.

Second, and here I must defer to the moderators, given time is of the essence, what about I knock up a strip list from this blog of those AFF members in the same boat.
This might give us an idea of whether we had sufficient critical mass to make it work.

I would be interested in some kind of "show of hands".

If we were to band together we might be able to get some kind of special treatment... I think professional associations get a $250pa reduction in fees on this card, for example. I would imagine you would need to collect names from interested people, and nominate one person to handle the negotiations with Amex. Given the strong opinions of many here on AFF, whoever was in charge of negotiating with Amex might find it difficult to achieve a consensus of interested card-holders, which would weaken the negotiating position.

Re: comparison with Singapore, US etc. This is tricky as each country has different sign-up bonuses, reward partners and complimentary features (eg I think only Aus and Canada get Marco Polo gold, and I know the sign-up points are much bigger here than in the US). On the other hand the price difference is very significant, and it would be interesting to see if Amex can be bullied... I mean persuaded to exercise some discretion for some of their more savvy clientele.

Another thought: if Amex ever got hold of the list of names, they might use it to select people for "financial audit". Could be difficult.

Back to my earlier post,

What about I go through the posts and just make a tally, no names no pack drill.
Might just give us an idea of how many people might be interested over and above those that have already put their hand up.

Naturally, what we do thereafter is up for discussion.

regards
Rono

Just renewed mine.. but I am interested for the future.

If you threaten to cancel and ask if they'll offer anything to keep you(to the actual cancelation department) are they offering anything at the moment?

Nope nothing, I was expecting a last minute save to keep me but they were happy to see me go!

Are they at least giving you the Reserve for free? I would keep that if that don't offer the Platinum

I'm keeping mine, it's saved my bacon quite a few times in the past (especially roadside assist...every single one of my supp card holders have used it at least once). If I had to get NRMA memberships for each of those cars, it would've been 2/3 of the $1200 anyways. Obviously if they remove roadside then it's a no brainer to get rid of it.

I didn't know about roadside assist!!!
but I am reading in the old book that its only if more than 51ks from home.
so no good if you live in sydney and don't go out of area.
and by the way they are doing deals for long time members.

I think its interesting how everyone sees different benefits in the card. The roadside Ive yet to use but have used lounge, hotel benefits and looking forward to having some flexibility with where to put my points for award flights. Im a newbie though and only learnt of the fee increase whilst waiting for our cards to arrive. Ive already pinpointed how we are going to use our Accor advantage plus free night and dining discounts. I'd probably have to wait and see the year out before I had a clear feeling of whether the $1200 was justifiable.

I think these cards are fast becoming dinosaurs and essentially survive on customers false perceptions of the 'value' of the benefits or in the case of Centurion which is now clearly comical, peoples status anxiety.

What sort of deals.. Although i haven't called up about the fee, this is the first I have heard that they are doing deals for cardmembers..

I wndered when someone would pick that up
Very observent
When your fee goes onto the card call and ask to cancel
they put me on to a very nice man who offered 50k
I accepted .

You're one lucky customer...

I've been a member for over 24 years and they wouldn't do 'deals'.

When was that? I managed to get the 50k bonus points last year (December) and I will try again this year but from what I've been reading earlier in the thread they no longer offer anything to stay... so I'd be interested to learn if the 50k bonus points were offered to you recently or early in the year...
