Maybe depends where they're based or more likely how the rep is feeling.

I had an American gentleman who went into a whole spiel about how he was sorry to hear I was thinking about cancelling and asked why etc.

has anyone been actually told that we wont be keeping the reserve with the NZ free flt?

I've just booked two SYD-ZQN return flights for next July when I was close to the anniversary date for my Amex Platinum Charge / Reserve so they're still giving the Reserve free flight at this stage. Hopefully it will continue for current cardholders.

called asked for reduction in the $1200 fee.
spoke to the US Frank.

said the reserve card still free( so the international short haul flight avail)

went thru the benefits then offered 44k to keep.
I said yes
will take this post down in a week.

has anyone recently been offered any decent amounts ?
a friend of mine was just told that the 1200 card wasn't really for her.
wonder if Amex record and listen to reps calls??
when she asked for an incentive to keep she was told 23k
not really enough to do anything with
i think she is going to cancel

I've called them up, got offered 36k points back in October, I've asked the rep to drop a note on my file and will follow it up when I decide to pay $1200.

Fast forward to last week, I've paid the $1200 and called an UK "Jason" get me my points please. As expected, the rep from October did not make a note so Jason can't do jack. He spoke to his supervisor, said they will need to retrieve the call around October (the whole purpose of the call in October is to get a replacement card issued...surely they track when cards are requested/issued? Yet they claimed there's no record of the call) and said they will call me back once they've retrieved the call. Heard nothing for a week, faxed the customer relation 2 days ago and heard nothing yet (I suspect the fax number is no longer valid so I'll send them via registered post) and if nothing gets resolved, FOS time.

Why don't you just cancel the card and re-apply 12 months later, you then will get all of new customer benefits. AMEX sure is not caring any existing customers, at least not now!!

Part of the problem is I've got a fair chunk of points sitting there and the ACE insurance stuff is actually useful, that saved my bacon couple of days ago.

Just spoke to a very knowledgeable man at Amex and asked why i got offered more than someone else
he couldn't explain till I asked is it because I spend a lot more so am more valuable he said your words not mine.
so there you have it!
spend more and you should be offered more to stay.

Care to share (in broad terms) how much you spend on your plat charge per annum?

Wouldn't have a clue just know it's much more than my friend spends also I have 3 diff plat cards I would imagine they would add it all up.

Downgrade to a cheaper version, at least to keep your points alive. For the insurance part, I believe you can find from other party which offers you better cover with cheaper price, unless you think AEMX insurance is worth $1200.

all you people who have not been offered anything or paultry amounts may be a bit surprised to know that a friend of mine who has a FREE card was offered 36000 and accepted to keep the card.

I'm up for renewal next month and half of me says I should really call in to get some free points, with the other half saying I really can't be bothered...

On one side, I feel that if newcomers are getting 90k signup bonuses, I should be entitled to something but at the same time, I've so many future reservations with Amex with FHR etc. that I'd no way realistically cancel my card. I think if they can check my booking records, chances are, they'll probably call my bluff if I threaten to cancel based on just that.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a clue what the average spend on this card would be around? I use this card exclusively for personal spending only and using the tool available on Amex's own website, it says I've only charged around $100k in the last calendar year so I doubt I have too much leverage with the retention team compared to some of the other people here.

Although in saying that, I do have a few other cards with Amex so maybe they'll have a 'customer value' for me across all my spending, and not just for this card alone.

How did he get the card for free in the first place?
