You are talking about the Platinum Charge Card are you not...that is the subject on this here.

Indeed I am. The only reason why I mentioned the other cards is because they all renew within a week or two of each other but yes, they are not relevant to the discussion.

That is correct.....I misunderstood the other card question.. sorry.

Got my 36k points at last and even then, it involves faxing a letter to their exec customer relations and even then there's no verbal communications at all. I've had better service with CBA/Citibank when I escalate things yet I pay $0 fees for those cards.

Downgrade to a cheaper version, at least to keep your points alive. For the insurance part, I believe you can find from other party which offers you better cover with cheaper price, unless you think AEMX insurance is worth $1200.

Maintaining 8 separate roadside assistance memberships isn't a small amount and it does get used. 5 call outs last year alone?

Just for interest, I called Amex today and asked them what they could offer me, otherwise I would downgrade to the Platinum reserve card. I was offered 44,000 points on the spot.

I happily accepted their offer!

Is this the first time you have asked for points to keep the card??

You can get them every year. I always honestly tell them that the $1200 fee is not 'small' and thus I'm always weighing up the benefits vs. costs and whether there are alternative cards available at the time of renewal. They always seem to offer something when I approach them in this manner.

mitwg.... Thanks, over the years I have had the fee reduced from $900 to $450 yearly, but since $1200, no go just points last year, anyway we will see in November.

Was offered and accepted just over 80k points to help with the pain of the $1200 fee.

Well done! What kind of monthly expenditure do you put on the card? I guess points offered would be somehow linked to spend...

called today and get offered 44k points, didn't even try hard, only mentioned I was looking to potentially cancel the card due to acceptance and there are lots of similar product on the market. The guy on the other end tried to re-introduce the benefits of the card to me and I wasn't very interested. He then looked at my account and says my spendings is good (thanks to my wife & her trip to Europe) and offered me 44k points on the spot to keep my account for another 12 months. I agreed & accepted and those points are in my account now.

Nice work also, I am going to try something similar this week and see what happens, although my current spend has not been that great in the last 2 years only about 2-3k per month.

Note AMEX has just increased the sign-up bonus for the AMEX Platinum Charge Card to 100,000 Membership Rewards or a whopping 120,000 Membership Rewards when using a referral (plenty of those in the Referrals section of AFF if you need one...)

Provided your partner / family member would qualify (100k gross annual income) it would be a good move to get your partner / family member to apply for a new card (and pocket the 120k Membership Rewards) with you as a supplementary cardholder and simply cancel your card...

That offer has some merit ....

keith on pointhacks describes some people having success with getting both the plat edge and plat reserve as "companion" cards with the plat charge. reading through most of what i can on a few threads it appears most have had success with either one but not both? anyone have success getting both?

if given a choice which would you guys pick? the edge gives more variety in terms of point earn whereas the earn on the reserve is very similar to the charge - however i suppose the reserve has more options for the free flight, and also the opportunity to use that flight or get a free nights stay if i did my research right.
