Amex platinum Charge annual fee increase

As a Velocity Gold who flights mostly Virgin (Australia domestic, codeshare partners overseas), I am deciding to give this card (and the free Reserve credit card) the flick. I will admit, I initially got it for the bonus points and all the travel extras, however, I have come to the following conclusions:

  1. 3-2-1 points earn (restaurants and travel) is OK. But my wife has the Velocity platinum Amex, which gives the same structure plus 3 points for Virgin, and a free return domestic flight.
  2. I will also ditch the free Reserve Credit card and pick up the Edge. gives a different 3-2-1 structure (fuel and supermarket) and has a free flight. Much better value for me then the Reserve.
  3. My 1.5 Velocity points to dollar NAB Platinum Alex is fee free (I have a loan with NAB) and gives the best general AMEX spend reward rate out there. I only need to spend $500 of my overseas travel to get free travel insurance
  4. Speaking of which, the re-introduction of free travel insurance when using points on the Plat Charge is nice, but they are only bringing back what they "enhanced" last year anyway. I will use NAB Amex to get my free travel insurance and all other platinum insurances.
  5. All the gold hotel upgrade cards (e.g. SPG gold, IHG gold etc) are nice...but I have never used them once. In any case, they will drop down to silver etc with each passing year eliminating their value. As a Virgin Gold, I have used the Hilton honours one to great affect.
  6. Ditto Marco Polo card. Have used it for lounge access a couple of times - but don't fly One world enough to keep Gold so this will revert to next level down and be useless to me.
  7. I rent a car about once a year, so the rental privileges also hold little value
  8. Virgin Lounge Access is of no value to me as I am a Virgin Gold member anyway.
  9. Priority pass was useful - but I have signed up to the Citibank Select Visa card for the bonus points (and best non Amex reward rate both here and overseas), and this card gives me P pass anyway. $700 annual fee is steep but I am only going for the bonus points and will ditch it after a year and revert to the much cheaper Virgin High Flyer Visa with its 4 cheap flights and 1.25 earn per dollar
  10. New $200 travel credit is a con. Worth about $150 after booking fee is deducted...and can only be used on return international travel only. Hotels or domestic flights are out. Platinum travel are far from the cheapest travel agent out there. I usually spend my points when going overseas anyway.
  11. Accor free night in hotel is a benefit. Although I have never stayed in one in my life.
  12. Don't care for Golf, and I can pick my own wine.

So all up, while the latest enhancements for $300 extra might be so so value, I will do what I should have done when they last "enhanced" the product, and throw it in the bin. I challenge anyone to line up the benefits against the $1200 price.

Great comments! And you provide some good arguments for others to look at different options.
I do think "enhancement" and "changes" are very easily accepted by the customers, otherwise things would have changed by now.
I will look into your suggestions and see how it could work for me. I bet you have a very strong point!
Thanks.

I received my plat charge card last week and applied for the reserve card immediately.

will let you know how I go should find out by end of week.

Kewl. I hope you get approved. The card is a bit of an investment! :)
Thanks for your response.

I find it a bit ironic that they 'enhance' the experience by adding Accor Advantage to the list.

I'm not complaining at the addition since anything free is good technically but for some the people that use the plat card for its travel benefits, most accor properties would not be somewhere I would be looking forward to staying over their usual FHR partners such as 4S or MO.

Firstworldproblems but just saying...

Would've preferred that they just gave us credits on FHR bookings instead.

Got the annual survey yesterday.. Looks like they want to change it again... Lots of questions around what don't I use... Ahhhh...

New to this community and to Amex platinum. Logged onto Amex today to review new benefits post 1st October. Has the Marco Polo Gold membership always been for only one year i.e. you need to then fly to their requirements to keep it beyond the year?

Welcome to A.F.F. mlob... now that is a good question.. I have re-applyed & waiting also.

The MP Gold is essentially an unwritten benefit, and the front line call staff never have any idea so don't bother calling them then posting the results- it's happened before with this benefit and they've been proven wrong.
As far as experience goes on this board, it lasts for 1 year but gets automatically renewed. The longest experience is still only 18months or so so far.
Similar with the diamond on the centurion- told it won't renew but it has so far.
As it's unwritten no one knows when it will be pulled or when the rules might change so I wouldn't put full value on it when deciding to renew.

Rang to cancel my Amex charge card last week and was offered nothing to keep me as a customer!

Been with Amex for 15 years, spend is well over $200k PA (business/personal)

I was told again and again that if I cancel, the Plat credit card will start to cost me $395

Haven't pulled the pin yet, as I like the Qantas transfer option and even if I cancel the Amex, Amex is still making a good chunk of $$ from me when I use my Commbank Amex

:(

Which plat credit card?

Added in a , to make my post clearer

The plat credit card yearly fee of $395 I was told, so an extra $500pa to keep the ability to transfer to Qantas

I was also reminded many times that my spend is now mainly travel and restaurants and how great the Amex card is for this compared to others. Of course I laughed, and said yes sure, but you are missing the fact that my spend has now decreased to less than $60k PA since the MR enhancements, as I use my bank issued Amex/Visa cards

I was then reminded that cancelling the card then means I pay for the Plat Credit card at $395 and that I get charged for that straight away..

You mean an extra $800 (card is now $1200) just to have the ability to transer to Qantas.
Tell them to get stuffed - can't wait till I make the call...

Well yes an extra $800 next June/July when my anniversary is up!

This was the first time I was offered nothing at all to stay, and I even hinted that some points/discount/bonus might keep me, especially after the numerous poor customer service interactions I had over the past month which caused my card to be "suspended"

One credit services rep had the audacity to suspend my charge and credit cards because $20 was overdue and I refused to pay it until next week when the normal payment was due....

I'd love to tell them to get stuffed but being able to move points to QF is a keeper for now.........

Not chasing Qantas (I'm with Virgin) makes it an easier choice to get rid of this card for me. On the other hand, I will investigate the possibly of resurrecting myself visa an affiliate charge card for more sign on goodness.

FYI

I was declined for the Reserve Card... even though the requirements are much lower than the Platinum Charge card?

That is a joke, I will be cancelling this card before the renewal in 2014.

The customer rep said I need to apply after six months of holding the Platinum Charge card.

I applied a week after I got the plat charge so that is not true and I was approved.

See this is what they told me and later they denied telling me this. I filed a complaint at the financial ombudsman. I will now add your remark showing that this is being told. They lied to me. And in their formal response wrote down they never say that. I got rejected again after 6 months so it is false advertising. Complain at ombudsman. Look up my post. You will recognise the story.

I have lodged a complaint with FOS. You could do the same. For 900A$ (soon 1200) they should not be providing misleading information.
