I don't follow your maths.

27 X $900 = $24,300

75,000 points is say half a J return to Europe = say $ 2000-$4000.

I personally do not value points at full retail J Fare as I would, if I had to buy, shop around for a "special" price.

ie one could fly Emirate J return to Brussels for $3500 return on a recent special (very time limited though), though this was unusually cheap and so I would value points as worth more than this one example.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I'm not talking so much about what 75k points could get you, but rather how much money you would need to spend to get 75k points.

On my current Platinum Edge, I get 3x points for $1 spent at major supermarkets. If for some freak reason I spent all my money at supermarkets, I would need to spend $25,000 to get that many points. Hence it being "worth" 27 years in membership fees.

Under normal circumstances, I would need to spend around $38,500 to get 75k points (assuming average of 2 points for $1 spent).

Not sure if that makes sense - but in short when I think about the value of free bonus points, I think about how much money I would need to spend to get those points if I were just spending/flying normally.

This is a separate issue to how much those points are actually worth when it comes to spending them.

If you pay the $900...plus the original $149..then I would imagine that you will get 20K + 75 K, plus the two flights.

If however you "upgrade" and negotiate a fee reduction on the Charge Card then I think recent experience would suggest no extra 75K.

Many of us recently had the choice ofa cheaper fee ($500 from memory), or full fee with the 75K. I opted for the 75K as it is worth more to me than $400.

When the card comes due for renewal...............will have to reassess.

if you "upgrade" to the Charge Card then I think my recent experience of downgrading from a platinum reverse card back to the gold EA no annaul fee would suggest you will foreit the 20k as that account has been closed before the 20k sign up points had a chance to be credited to the edge account. not sure if you will also get the extra 75K. you best calling up to check before doing it. Also im interested in upgrading to the platinum Charge Card to get the 75k points but not sure if i will get it or not by upgrading as it maybe for new applicants only even though ive never had a platinum Charge Card. Also i wonder if they call up to check income requirements of 100k for people that do upgrades applications?

I think you will only get the 75 if you apply afresh..and via the link.
You will certainly have to pay the full $900 to also get the cash.

I tried to upgrade several times...and was told each time..75K or a fee reduction but not both.

On the Edge..as long as it is NEW card and not an UPGRADE/DOWNGRADE I would anticipate that one would get the 20K.

Hi,
Correct, It is a completely new application, and must be via the net...to qualify for the 75k points.

I decided to bite the bullet yesterday and apply for the platinum charge.

I had a few questions so called the enquiry number, the operator told me that I could apply over the phone and the 75k bonus points would apply. I queried this several times and was reassured that this was the case.

It may be because I received the 75 k bonus offer in the post and therefore qualified in another way (although that offer expired 15 january). The operator did check my name and postcode and then "confirmed I was a premium client and therefore entitled to the 75k bonus points offer." Hopefully I'm not in for a major runaround.

I tried to negotiate an Edge CC instead of the reserve but no dice.

Apply via net link......just to make sure,,,you get the 75k bonus points
as per term & conditions....Amex can be tricky with promos!!

Cheers M.P.

Yes agree.
T&C are one's friend.

Besides, part of the reason why Amex has problems issuing bonus points is that they have so many promos that their own staff lose track.

If you have written T&C, and follow them then you always get the points sooner or later. Or at least that is my experience. Though sometimes yes you do have to chase them up.

If you don't have T&C and have to rely on that some re told you on the phone, then you may not be so lucky if a dispute arises.

Thanks for the advice, now I'm feeling kinda nervous....

I will call the new applications # today and see if they confirm that the 75k bonus applies (and push for something in writing) before I panic.

I can apply via the link, but as the phone application is already underway (I received an SMS and said YES) I don't want to end up with 2 applications and 1800 in annual fees?!?

Sorry for the noob question but what are the payment terms of a charge card? On the site all I get tell is that you need to settle it all (which is fine I always do) but how many days do you get?

So if I go on my Feb business trips and I return to the office to do expenses on the first week of March, how much time do I have to get the money to pay off the bill?

thanks

I believe that's only if you add on the 'free' Platinum Credit Card. It includes a few destinations in NZ et al.

hehe so they want you to have a normal credit card and a charge card?

Ah so singapore is out of the question?

Like there is a lot to like about the card... esp the priority pass because I don't know how long I'll have QF WP for... but yeah... for 900 it's pushing it a bit... my accounts department need 3 weeks to process stuff after i get in the claim so looks like it's a no goer for me...

That's right, SIN is not included. If the blue moon offer is still going, try that, you can get the first year for $450.

I want the 75k points to be honest... I'm aiming for 560k points by the end of the year for a honeymoon rtw j... this card would help but every 2nd month i'd have to pay the bill before my company does and flights to NZ or Aus domestic cities do nothing for me... =(

I'm a bit down right now... Citi won't let me get the plat card and now this isn't an option...

Perhaps get a cash advance from your employer. That would help ease the burden regarding funding the payments yourself.

Why don't you submit your expenses to your accounts department from the invoice you recieve at the time, rather than waiting for your charge card statment. Alternatively you can put the purchases on the complimentary credit card, but you will only receive 1.5 times points on the first $100K of charges on the credit card, instead of the $200K on the charge card.

Yeah I called them up and they said that it's 55 days interest free... perfect...

now with Amex do they care if you put business expenses on a credit card? I know they don't give a toss with the charge card but isn't it different with the normal CC?
