Hmmm, that is interesting, and I'm sorry to hear that! I probably wouldn't have rung AMEX, as what you are trying to do is clearly excluded by their T&C's (despite a large number of people, myself included, having no problems getting the points) and I wouldn't want to bring that to their attention. That aside though, I think I would let the application proceed, as you've got nothing to lose at this point - assuming AMEX are still offering pro-rata refunds in Oz - which I certainly believe they still are. Others may be able to correct me on this, or confirm.

If the points come through, then great, if they don't, call and cancel asking for an annual fee refund. You could always try negotiating for the points, but I wouldn't hold out much hope if they don't credit automatically. I would have used the reason that the bonus points didn't come through as expected, but they have probably logged your call about that on file already. Either way I think you'll get an annual fee refund if you need it - assuming you don't use the $300 travel credit etc.

Post back and let us know how you go. I'm sure others will be very interested. I'll be apply for another AMEX card this week, and I'll let the team know if the points don't post.

Yeah, kind of a bummer.

I did ask the question of refunds a few months back, I understand they don't do pro-rata refunds but if it is early in the piece and you haven't obtained any benefits (e.g., points, flight redemptions...etc), you can ask for a cancellation and the annual fee should be reversed.

I'll see what happens after the card arrives. It is what it is. Haha.

So just a quick question on this card. One of the benefits appears to be the elite status tied to certain hotel programs - hhonours and spg...etc. Is this status for the life of the card or for a limited initial period and then you have to re-qualify annually with a certain number of stays...etc?

I've been informed that there is a card that you get another card with a free annual fee with this Platinum card that has a free flight like the Velocity Platinum card but it needs to be applied for.Question is it worth having another credit application to get this card?
And what is the major difference between a charge card and a credit card?

Platinum Reserve, here's the link to it. You will receive 15k MR points as well.

Same 3/2/1 structure as the Platinum Card, you've got the option between a return flight as far as SYD-PER or SYD-CHC/AKL or a night's stay at certain hotels. This is the free accompanied card for the Platinum Card. On its own, it's usually $395.
I think your link is for Platinum Edge card which has a different points structure from the Platinum card. My understanding is Amex does not advertise Platinum Reserve on their website anymore and you can only get it as a companion card for the Platinum card.

AMEX Platinum Charge Card: 120,000 points, $200 Travel Credit, free domestic flights, travel insurance, unlimited lounge access: Virgin, Priority Pass & AMEX and Hotel Program Status. Details HERE
AMEX Platinum Edge Credit Card: 15,000 points, free domestic flight, travel insurance, up to 3 pts/$. Details HERE

Amex Reserve
Yeah the application you're looking for is here:
I've uploaded to my dropbox.

its got essentially the same point structure as the Plat Charge. Has a free flight which is actually better than the Velocity plat. If from the east coast, you can get to Perth and also NZ.

Alternatively, you can get a free hotel night stay.
Heres the list:

Neither is probably the best answer. In all the cases, that I can think of, it is for the life of the contract between AMEX and the hotel company to provide that benefit to Plat Charge card holders. If AMEX and the hotel company renew their contract the benefit continues year on year, if they don't it stops (for example the Accor benefits that recently ceased).

I had an edge and got the bonus points no problem on the charge. I think if you ask the question of course the answer will have to be according to the T&Cs. There system however doesn't identify you as existing and still gives the points. Also I found out the spending limit needed for the bonus points was only $500, not $1000 as stated. Annual fee is only charged at the end of the statement period. Just put 1k on the card and if you don't get the bonus points then cancel the card before the annual fee is charged.

I'm sure we all know the drill by now and I trust you would have done your due diligence before applying. Here's my link for the Plat Charge if there is anyone left that has not applied for this awesome signup bonus of a thing!

It's also 'triple dip' bonus time for referrers, so I would be forever grateful and love you long time should you chose to signup through my link

Cheers!

As they have a great triple dip on the referral link I am thinking of getting my wife to get this card as well through this link. The issue though is that she is a supplementary card holder. Would this still allow the application?
If they did, that is 60,000 points for me, 120,000 points for her. Not sure if its worth $1,200 though.

Here is my link again if anyone wants to be generous and give me points for trip overseas.
Its been a tough year for my wife by being in and out of hospital a lot so we are really looking forward to our overseas trip next year. :)

If I was her I would go for it. Essentially 180,000 points between both your accounts is a great booster. I would also value that many points far greater than the $1200 annual fee.
Also, because she is just a supplementary card holder I don't see why she wouldn't receive the full bonus.

Think about it, $1200 for $1800 worth of points so it's still good value if it goes through. Cancel the card before the annual fee gets billed if the points don't come through.

....

Go for it! Supplementary card holders don't count as card holders for the purposes of applying for AMEX cards. So if approved she will get the points (and you too) - triple-double dipping; I like it :).

Well worth the $1200 in my opinion. If you are going to use the points for flights, surely at lower end of the valuation spectrum they are "worth" 1.9-2.0c/pt. If my maths is right, for a double-triple dipper that comes out at $3420-$3600 - that's worth the annual fee in my book !

Good luck!

Mine arrived today. Spending begins and the long wait to see if bonus is paid. Haha.

I applied last friday hopefully get mine soon.

So here's what happened. I applied for the card last night using a referral link - immediate approval, no issues - this morning I rang up AMEX and asked them to confirm that the application was effective through the referral (confirmed yes) and asked to confirm bonus of 120,000 - operator went away for a short while, came back and told me that as I had only cancelled the Platinum Edge CC in Feb, no bonus for me. That seems at odds with what everyone is saying.

Not sure where this leaves me - and if I should just let the application go altogether? Is it possible that the points system would show the operators one thing and then act differently once the card is activated?

Throwing my hat in the ring on the off chance I can nab myself 60,000 points this month!

This card has been a great contributor to our point accrual plus have enjoyed the extra benefits that come along with the card. My advice is to keep your eye on the Departures magazine for extra one off benefits from time to time. Been having some good fortune recently nabbing business seats on Hawaiin Airlines for my family of 4.

In regards the Platinum reserve card, I know that you can avail of it where you get free flights to NZ from Sydney. What is the availability like for those flights. Can you book any date or flight you want or do they give you only award type flights.

If it appears as a starter fare on the VA website, then its up for grabs. Must also be booked 2 weeks prior to departure, or at least that was what i was told over the phone.
