Thanks mate :) So let me indeed send you something nice... what about a free flight? :) Read on...

Up to about a year ago AMEX use to give to every Platinum Charge cardholder a free AMEX Platinum Reserve card (they waved the $349 annual fee) - the card wasn't as good as the Platinum Charge (no major perks, less comprehensive travel insurance) and you had to apply for it separately (meaning you had to complete another application form asking all the usual questions) but came with a free return Virgin Australia flight every year on a number of domestic routes as well as to New Zealand from SYD / MEL / BNE.

AMEX has since pulled the plug on the Platinum Reserve (probably replaced by the Velocity Platinum Card) and no longer advertise a free companion card with the Charge Platinum, however the "old" Platinum Charge cardholders are still enjoying the free Reserve and the free yearly flights that come with it. Although AMEX has pull all information about the Reserve from their website new applicants to the Platinum Charge have been successful (a friend of mine did it about 3 months ago) calling AMEX and asking for an application form for the free Reserve card to be emailed to them.

I cannot guarantee this is still working but give it a go (after your receive and activate your Platinum Charge). Tell them your mate at work has the free Reserve and you want the same. Be polite but firm. Good luck and post the outcome on AFF ;)

thanks i knew about this already. read it on pointhacks.
when i read your first line i thought you were gifting me your free flight - which i'd have much appreciated

Enjoy the card snodger. Make sure you sign up quickly for the accor Advantage Plus. Think it's on it's last legs. There's a free hotel night in it for you.

just sign up for everything. The card use to come with either a fee free Platinum Reserve or Platinum Edge card. I went the Reserve as it came with a free virgin flight to OZ or NZ or another free hotel night. (Plus Im more of an Aldi shopper then a Woolies shopper .Ring them up and see if you can get either. I don't think they are advertised anymore as a card benefit. We as a family have much benefited from the hotel benefits. Keep your eye on the site and the magazine which will be sent to you as there are benefits that are only advertised in those places.

Somebody else in the AMEX forum just managed to get the free Reserve (so definitely still doable) but couldn't talk them into getting a free Edge. See relevant post at http://www.australianfrequentflyer....m-charge-annual-fee-53222-51.html#post1297670

Yeah, I called them last night and they said they were sending me an application form. Looks like its not advertised but if you ask for it they will give it to you.... We'll see!

Also... Just booked my SIA class 1st suite from Paris > Syd using the points! Sweet!

There weren't that many open spots, about 95% are "wait-list" tickets. Not sure what the likelihood of a waitlist turning into an actual ticket is though. If you are flexible on the dates though its fairly easy.

I'd agree with Marco Polo on the Reserve being a great additional card. We'll done getting an application form for one. It has definately been advertised as no longer available to new customers (since oct last year) but all benefits continuing for existing customers. Keep us updated.

cheers to Marcopolo for his referral , now here's mine if anyone would be so kind :)

just a bit more information:
The free reserve companion card is indeed still available and they were only too happy to send out the paperwork.
so just a quick recap:

* 120,000 points
* 1,000 min spend, 1,200 annual fee
* free flight per year. NZ and Perth included (w/ reserve)
* 1 free hotel night per year (w/ reserve)
* $200 amex travel credit
* 1 free night @ Accor hotels (if signed up by 30th March 2016)
* platinum status with Accorplus
* free lounge access via priority pass
* the most kick-cough concierge service known to man kind.

Happy days.

* 1 free night @ Accor hotels (if signed up by 30th March 2016)

This is interesting - complimentary Accor Plus membership is supposed to expire at the end of September 2015 (so assuming you sign up by 30/9/15 your membership would be valid until 30/9/16) - did Amex formally communicate to you that you can sign up by 30/3/2016?

Still a great offer because you can use the 120k points on a number of airlines not just Qantas and Virgin. Thanks to all that use my link. :)

Thanks for the person who used my link!! If anyone else is keen to apply, would be most grateful if you considered my link above. The offer of 120k points is until the end of October. Thanks

Just a friendly reminder that although the Velocity Platinum 110k bonus ended at the end of September (being replaced by a lower 80k bonus) you still have time until OCTOBER 31st to apply for the AMEX Platinum Charge card and pocket 120,000 Membership Rewards points.
