AMEX Platinum Edge Referral bonus

It is not uncommon for Amex to leave existing cardholders on their existing annual fee.

Login to site. In menu across top of page select Rewards and then Refer a Friend from drop-down options.

I'm a supp cardholder on my wife's account, so I believe she should be able to refer me for my own card from reading this thread. But we can't get around this facebook requirement. None of us has a facebook account and I really don't like to create one if I can avoid it.

I can get to the page detailed above but once I click on "recommend" it would only allow a facebook option to go to the next step.

How do you guys get around this and are able to create this personalised link for the 3 Platinum cards?

Hi smart. I have asked this of Amex and they tell me there is no way around it, you must use facebook in the referral process. Let me know if I can help.

Edit: Just reread your other question. You cannot refer your supplemental card holder and receive benefit under the points terms.

Ah, that's a real shame. Sounds like we have to get a facebook account :-(....can it actually be a fake name or does the name have to match your card? And I assume both parties have to have a facebook account then....

I thought someone said on page 2 that supplementary card holders would be eligible. What if I cancel my suppl card and then apply? Does it say anywhere how far back you are not allowed to have owned an AMEX card?

I would think that if you created a facebook account in the name of say Genghis Khan (I hope I haven't revealed your real name...) then Genghis would be the one to receive your points.

I think it works the other way around - i.e. its not dependant on the facebook account.

Obviously I don't work for AMEX so I can't confirm this for 100% but basically, the referral form before the facebook only update itself used to contain an option to either email the referral or facebook it to someone. This option was only provided to you after you've already entered your AMEX card details (details of the existing card with your card type, your name and card number). Once these details were in, it was up to you to either send that referral via email or by a facebook message/post.

Given the above, I don't think it matters what details you have on facebook. All it seem to matter is whether you have the ability to post or send messages to facebook friends and what you will notice is that it just simply contains a unique referral link which you can then use later.

Well explained mitwg. I believe recent changes no longer allow the email route of referral. At least this was the explanation I received from Amex.

OK, so I can create two facebook accounts (let's hope this is easy) maybe just using our initials as the names. Then follow the AMEX instructions, log into facebook and then I'll receive a link I can send to another facebook account? I can't believe they make it this hard...

But problem still remains that I might have to cancel my current card before I apply for the new one? I wouldn't want to miss out on the points after all this work. I guess there is nothing from deleting your facebook accounts after all this is done?

smart, as mitwg explained the link is to your Amex referral (by your account name) and not related to who you purport to be on facebook. You will need to submit the person you are referring direct to Amex or not get the points.

Why don't you ask these questions of Amex to ensure you get the right advice. At the end of the day we could be sending you on a wild goose chase. Here is the link - https://www.americanexpress.com/aus...ntactus.shtml?page=CM&inav=au_utility_contact

I have a feeling they purposely made it difficult because technically, the referral really was only supposed to be given out to friends. Obviously as an email, this is hard to enforce considering you can send that referral email to anyone whereas with facebook, you actually need to be friends with that person if you want to legimately send them a referral.

And as far as the supplementary cards go, I highly doubt you will be able to refer yourself a supplementary card to get the extra points (they share the same MR pool as the primary card). I believe when they said supplementary cards are eligible, it probably means you are eligible to send a referral to your friend as a supplementary cardholder rather than get free points by simply applying for a supplementary card.

The only instance where I can see referring yourself MAY (not sure on this obviousy) work is if you are truely intending to get a new card. For example, if you already have a platinum charge card and you want to get a platinum edge card for the triple points on supermarkets, then it may work if you are referring yourself. But again, I've never tried this so I would have no idea what to expect on this.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I currently am a supplementary card holder on Mrs Smart1999's AMEX account. I don't have an AMEX account under my name. What I want is for my wife to refer me to get my own card (not another supplementary card) and for this I want the referral points for both her and myself. I'm happy to cancel my current AMEX card which is only a supplementary card anyway, so no points will be lost and I just lose my card...if this is what is required. AMEX would get a second account out of us while I would otherwise stop putting money on our existing AMEX as the points are maxed out after reaching $150k per year. So, I think it's a win-win for everyone.

Does this change anything?

Sorry, I did misunderstand you then.

But if this is the case, you should definitely get points. I doubt you will need to even cancel your supplementary card.

While it is true that in the T&Cs that the referral only works if you are a referring a NEW customer, I referred several people from work who all had existing AMEX cards under their name and both of us got the points correctly. Infact, we inquired about this with AMEX before we went ahead (asking the same question you are, as in, whether my colleague would have to cancel his card first) and they confirmed that as long as the referral link is used, both of us would get points even though my colleague was an existing cardmember.

EDIT: But yes, as prozac recommends, ask AMEX directly again to be sure. I would hate to see you screw it up because of my poor advice.

mitwig, I wasn't intentionally casting nasturtiums. ;)

No offense taken lol. I was just thinking about the fact that everything I said technically goes against the T&Cs that AMEX has (new customers only) so given this and also on what you said, I thought I too would want smart1999 to atleast have some sort of firm confirmation from AMEX (written would be best) before he takes the next step.

At least smart will now have a clearer idea of which questions he should ask to get the response he needs. Amex should put us on commission!

Got the all clear response from AMEX, so should be fine to refer a supplementary card holder as long as they never had their own AMEX account. Actually, they said 'never', but I'm wondering how far back they would look to check.

Thanks for letting us know smart. Good luck. Now get out there and start spending.
