Re: AMEX Velocity Platinum Card - 110,000 Points / $349pa / $1000 Spend

I referred my wife.
She didn't receive immediate approval, assume as she was 2 weeks into a new job.
20k referral points reflected in my account.
She received a letter saying the card is delayed, but will come...soon.
A statement arrives with the Annual Fee on it for a card not yet received, activated or able to be used (at least we know the last 4 digits of it now from the statement though!)
Hope it arrives in time to spend the $1000! (they have given a 10 day extension on the spend period, even though the statement date is from 20 July....so nearly 5 weeks and counting)
Am sure SQ suites will make it all wortwhile

I'm in a similar situation. Received a letter last Friday (dated Wednesday) promising that my card would be in the mail on 20/8. Fingers crossed it arrives tomorrow. AMEX do keep sending me emails reminding me to activate and register online for a card I don't have yet.

how bizzare, the way it works is all over the place. I was approved straight away, with the card arriving about 4 days later. My parents were not approved straight away, but cards arrived around 5 days later as well. no email or anything notifying.

They did claim that they were having problems issuing cards

probably ran out of silver ink.... every man and his dog signing up for this no-brainer deal :D

You're actually not far off. I just spoke to amex to check where mine might be as I still haven't received it (was actually mailed Friday). The rep told me that amex had actually run out of cards and were forced to wait for a reorder due to them underestimating the take up of the offer.

Too funny..

Personally would be asking them to reduce. Under Comprehensive Credit Reporting crecit providers will know your limit but not your balance. Because they are covered by the Responsible Lending provisions many will assume you have (or could) have the whole amount outstanding which then reduces their willingness to lend more.

I suspect one the reasons Credit Providers are offering such big signons now is to capture people now and offer high limits to them to reduce their attractiveness to other lenders once CCR comes in.

Best to post your link into the referrals thread as it may be deleted by mods in this thread.

Have used one of the links in this forum from someone who posted handy info so will try pass the baton on and hopefully someone finds my comment interesting.

To add further information that a prospective applicant may find helpful and therefore click my link!

The magic point amount required for a Europe return trip is 250,000 points for a return business class (J) seat.
250,000 velocity points would also get you two return economy(Y) seats. If you are lucky enough to have a companion/husband/wife you is eligible to apply..... two credit card 110,000 bonus amounts plus one referred amount will give you 240,000 points. Need another 10,000 points and you don't think you'll achieve it soon enough with credit card expenditure or flying (or begging from a relative) you can purchase velocity points from the Starwood Preferred Guest program, SPG points transfer to Velocity at 1:1. Join SPG for free and purchase 10,000 points for $350 US. SPG membership is free. (There is typically a two week wait between joining and being able to purchase SPG points).

My wife just received her AMEX Velocity Platinum as primary cardholder. She already has AMEX Charge Platinum and AMEX Reserve Platinum both as supplementary cardholder from my account. She tried to add her new AMEX Velocity Platinum to her online account at www.americanexpress.com/australia/ but it keeps coming up with an error message... can you actually "mix" Velocity with Charge / Credit Platinum cars in the same online account?

CCR will be the first step but it's not the end game. Additionally having multiple high limits does not in any way suggest you are using them. While it does suggest perhaps some risk in dishing more credit out to you - it does prove you're responsible with that credit.

In the future we'll see `credit portability` where you have one credit limit managed by a central player/gov. From there banks will fight for you to shift some or all of your credit limit to them.

Re: AMEX Velocity Platinum Card - 110,000 Points / $349pa / $1000 Spend

Does anyone have experience applying for this card (or an Amex more generally) whilst working for a foreign-based employer? What are the chances of getting approved?
I've got an Australian residential address but am currently working overseas. Presume this would make it harder for Amex to verify income? It's a large international firm but with no Australian office.

Nolzy. I realise your post has been removed as it was in the wrong thread. Just wanted to also note. I don't mind you reposting information that I have written but would aprreciate it being shown as a quotation. That is what the reply with quote button is for.

Usually this would be difficult but there is little evidence Amex are actually verifying income.

Is there any evidence? Has anyone actually had an income check? From what I have seen if you have an acceptable credit score you're in.

Well I'm not privy to everyones data or Amex's processes. The evidence of a few people given here is not something I'd like to extrapolate to the entire population of everyone who has applied and personally would think Amex would be in danger of failing to meet Responsible Lending laws if they didnt check anyone, but its true that noone here has admitted to having had an income check!
