And so the substitute Alaska trip begins

So while down south the weather has turned sour, while it teemed down during the night, we woke up to this:

The crew knew it was my birthday yesterday so this was sweet

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1465007509.439978.jpg

So after another wonderful brekky, it was high tide and a great time to - fish again. Our efforts yesterday went unrewarded.

So me with my low tech but cute fishing line and MrP with his new fly fish line.

It was four zip to low tech - but then MrP found his stride. Currently 5-4 my way but I have returned to the shade and MrP continues.

Glorious day.

I had to take this photo as well as hold the line for my first catch as MrP seemed not to notice. ;).

Thank Goodness he caught one. Now I can start trying again. Phew.

Another 'selfie'.

I trust you threw the fish back. They look a little on the smallish side to me though the garfish may be OK.

Enjoy it while you can; it is feral weather down here.

I always do. They were quite large - maybe 12 inches? Apparently Adelaide is gorgeous today.

Bigger fish than the looked then :)

Yes, I see Adelaide is bucking the eastern states and is showing as 'mostly sunny' with a top of 17C. Think I'd prefer Hamilton though!

You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

Yep. Thats the spot.

Another gorgeous day. Groundhog perhaps? Brekky then fishing.

Don't rub in the good weather! We're not as bad as the more coastal areas but still awful.

Good fishing?

One of us successful so far . Three for me but two of those being garfish? Long skinny ones that dont always do well after being caught. One of them sprayed me with brown gooey slime  Karma I guess.

Did you see on CC that Celebrity Infinity broke one of the Ketchikan wharves?

I don't know.

Orange photo bomb.

Even better

I showed it to the couple and they loved it. After futile attempts sending it to them, the hotel is doing it for me.

Ha ha - but normally you don't like be photographed :)

Was that Infinity - I didn't read the full thing. We were on her around the Cape in 2011.

Yep. 2 million $ damage. Check out cc. Of course someone filmed the whole incident.

Yummy. Son in law eggs at Cooca Chu restaurant.

Nice day again today. Fishing. Three more.

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1465125004.265302.jpg

Tomorrow we are taking a boat to Whitehaven Beach. Should be nice.

Tonight we saw a kangaroo running across the beach. Too fast for photos but just here:

Humidity has gone now so much cooler. Plenty of stars and even the milky way out tonight.

Yesterday was spent at Whitehaven Beach. Everyone does Whitehaven Beach.

Humidity disappeared yesterday and it was cool in the morning. The locals donned jackets while tourists enjoyed the mild weather.

First - the Yacht Club built to resemble a sting ray from the air. A staggering $60 million to build.

On the way we passed the 6 star resort - Quaalia, resort choice for the rich and famous. We were required to slow down as we passed.

Then looking into Catseye Beach. Our resort is in front of the large high rise buildings. What were they thinking.

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1465257618.241120.jpg

Probably built when high rise was seen as the way to go for resorts - rather like the US ones of some years back. Glad they have moved to more appealing looking ones now.
Is MrP having fishing success now or is it still all one way?

MrP is currently winning in the fishing stakes. A beauty caught today.

Back to Whitehaven.

A stunningly gorgeous day. ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1465270055.455697.jpg

The same Japanese couple were on the trip. Once they worked out it was me from the other day they got very excited. Took another photo of them 'toyotaring' on the beach but his phone camera was weird. Several seconds delay on taking the photo. Then held the shutter down on his proper camera and got some great shots. Then the girl wanted a photo with me - why, an old lady messing the view, but obliged then went to walk away. Nope, the guy wanted one with me too! Such a sweet couple they were. Seemed very relaxed with each other and enjoyed the water.

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1465270400.304211.jpg

The sand is powder sand. So soft and never gets too hot. Being the lowest tide of the year the beach was at its widest.

There was also a wedding done on the beach. The bride and guests were ushered up a bit. Then of course she ended up in the water, as you do. I'm sure they enjoyed it but it looked a bit, well, too impromptu. They didn't really seem to know what to do next. Can I say bogan? Yep, I just did.

Last night we revisited the pub for dinner. Chicken satay special turned out to be chicken bits in a too-mild peanut casserole. Blech.

Today we are on one of these
ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1465270679.987532.jpg

But not before breakfast of this:
ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1465270715.752624.jpg

Very nice for a change but back to the best bacon and eggs tomorrow.

Then off to check out the island. Another stunning day.

First the lookout where we will go for a drron sunset picture tonight.
