Angry about proposed travel ban exemption for footballers

I think that a few of the “Stars “ have had one-too-many boozy nights. But, hey.

So these items from the ABC live blog really sum up how I feel - why do these pampered athletes get to do things that are denied to the rest of the community, many of whom would be more responsible - or at least would be no more irresponsible.

We have seen heart rending stories on this blog about people denied permission to attend family funerals or to see their dying relatives before they pass on. Stories in the news about families separated with one parent here and the other somewhere else and kids not knowing when they will see the absent parent again. Pregnant women with their partner overseas and denied permission to leave or for the partner to come home, Even families with loved pets left behind overseas when they rushed home earlier in the pandemic. No travel exemptions for these people.

As everyone knows, I'd like to see my son - I haven't even bothered applying for an exemption as I don't fit into any of the boxes for an exemption other than longing for my family. The athletes get to take their families with them no matter what border rules are in place within Australia as long as they agree to abide by strict conditions. They agree to do that, and then breach the conditions. I don't even get the opportunity. Yes I am a little person, but it really is infuriating that there are rules for the little people and much better rules for the pampered. Animal Farm lives on in 2020.

But from the ABC live blog today, it seems at least that some other people get how I am feeling about this. And the key part of the person who says you can travel for your job if you have to is exactly that part - if you have to. No one has to play footy or cricket in these circumstances. YMMV.

Here's the link to the blog - it takes you to the newest story so you will have to scroll down a fair way if you want to verify these items.

Or this story about a norther NSW mother of sick newborn denied permission to visit the child in Gold Coast hospital, while the footy players kick on. There is something wrong with our priorities.

There’s big money in some sports promotions, and big money will always win out.

That is a truly desperate situation. The parents could’ve had a Covid test immediately and then waited for a couple of days and then gone to join the newborn. The mother at least should absolutely be there with her baby. Is the only option available to fly a newborn baby across the border where the parents can’t join it?

While the border towns are handled badly as this story demonstrates, what has it to do with sports people? In addition it seems to be a requirement of the hospital and not the state.

Ms Mortensen said Harvey's parents thought they had an exemption to travel across the border, but did not realise that did not mean they would have access to their son.
"The hospital contacted them and said 'No, you can't come in unless you quarantine in a hotel for 14 days'," she said.

Any sports person from NSW if they entered Qld would have to go into 14 day quarantine, but here the parents could get an exemption and cross the border. The issue here is more the hospital and probably the risk to all of its patients that it is concerned with. Certainly in NICU and ICU in Vic at present visitor access is tightly controlled. Parents and relatives cannot simply arrive when they wish to see patients.

Ablett from Geelong FC went back to Vic to visit his ill child. If he is to rejoin his team in Qld he has to serve the current 14 day quarantine before he can.

So now that all the footy players, coaches and families have had their special treatment, what do we see:

But hey they all got fined or suspended, so that's OK.

More evidence that sustained mental impairment causing poor choices comes from body contact sports? 🤔

(or maybe they were richard craniums from the very start without a real excuse 🤬 )

Actually its not Gold Coast Hospital. The baby was flown by helicopter to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. The parents are reported as saying they were willing to comply with hotel quarantine but the unknown duration of the baby's need to be in Brisbane made it difficult to know what to do:

From ABC news web site:
"Glen and I were refused entry to the hospital until after 14 days' mandatory quarantine in a hotel," Ms Northfield said.

"We would have been more than willing to do that if there was a guarantee that Harvey would be there for that long, but no-one is 100 per cent sure and the second he no longer needs such extensive treatment he will be flown back to Lismore."
Very sad they cannot be with their sick newborn child. If there was a good case for an exception, this would have to be it.

thanks for the correction of which hospital in my earlier post

I find it interesting that the best behaved group of all is the team that the OP was outraged about in the first place. The Warriors have kept their heads down and noses clean. In fact they have been victims of the public on the Central Coast using their names to sign into bars and restaurants

It’s a real shame that a few fools, who don’t play by the rules, just muddy the waters for the rest. ☹️

While kids with double lung transplants are forced to seek inferior medical treatment from new doctors because they can’t get an exemption to cross a border a few Km from their home to see their usual specialist.

But that’s ok because our foul mouthed QLD premier has clarified that QLD hospitals are for QLDers and NSW hospitals are for people living in NSW. Cool and normal.😐😐

Makes me want to hurl.
