Angry about proposed travel ban exemption for footballers

If they were granted an exemption as essential workers here in Tasmania that means you are allowed to "work"but confined to barracks the rest of the time.If so they were OK.
Tasmanian TV news had a bit more about this incident tonight. They were meant to train in pairs but during runs the pairs caught up.They were reported by nearby golfers who saw 8 together. Now that is clearly OK by SA laws.
“the pairs caught up”. Is that what they said? 🤣

So the Police have cleared the Crows of breaking the self iso rules. Now let's see what the VicAFL have to say.
AFL can not make laws so the dominant law is that of SA.
The AFL may make rules which they can insist are mandatory on those in the AFL industry.Wonder what would happen if the 4 SA and WA teams started an action on restriction of trade. They won't I don't doubt but if a couple of other teams decided to apply to go to SA or WA it may get interesting.

Totally don't understand the fixation on laws and the differences in state lock-down restrictions.

They are a team that is part of a league. The league sets the standards for teams to meet to be part of its league and ensure the survival of the league in tryng times.

If they want to play in the SANFL, that's fine - but they don't.

Typical of these self titled "stars" who just want their cake and eat it and stick one finger up to anyone who tells them what to do.

Sure. But this is likely off topic. The AFL have said that all non Vic teams must abide by the restrictions of the Vic state which is different to WA and SA, on the basis of fairness. However they turn a blind eye to every other aspect of the AFL that is blatantly unfair to the interstate teams. Convenient at best.

I think a lot of people are missing the fact that the exemption doesnt just help the players or the corporation but the general public. It is something that a lot of people can get enjoyment from at a time like this as well as will keep people at home watching the tv and getting enjoyment as well as social conversations on phone calls etc after each game to their friends etc rather than going stir crazy or going out and breaking isolation rules. This will increase mental health for a lot of people. Thats how i see it, there are far more benefits as well as they could so easily have done one of the suggestions from i believe wayne bennet which was to go to a country town and make all the teams stay in that one town with a stadium, far from any exposure and no travelling in or out so no chance of exposure for them or the towns people.

I don’t think anyone is debating the benefits of having this form of entertainment turned back on.

What is worrisome is the ability of a large group of super talented (but not overly intelligent) sports people and management to follow pretty simple rules so there is limited chance for virus spread and harm caused in the process of producing sport entertainment.

Agree and I follow the Crows. I didn't think that in ISO you would be able to go out and train with a non related person anyway? So if that's the case, even in that they were given dispensation. But that wasn't enough for them. Accidental or not.

Apparently it was the golfers who dobbed them in. Three holes of the golf course were closed for them. In SA we have always been allowed to play golf but only in pairs. And never during iso from travel/infection. Quite interesting.

But by the time end of may rolls around, isolation rules are changing anyway, and I get some of the young players can be silly at times but thats where the rules of going to a country town in north queensland would have worked, no temptations and no possible way to leave the town if its quite far from nearby towns / cities as well as curfews in place etc and of course strict rules if you do break the rules, you get banned from playing as well as a fine which the team will then end up punishing you in various ways

I am glad the health minister for Qld said NRL signed the rules that each player had to get a flu shot, no jab no play, simple.
Because if the same player tried that with the corona virus vaccine it would set a precedent.

The out of Victorian AFL clubs are in a difficult spot although those SA players were acting dumb. I guess golfers who had to play by the rules so should the football players.

Looking forward to the NRL and AFL to eventually starting up, then I won't care so much for the bars and night clubs not opening up.

The big money end of town wants big money sport to start up again as well. If people enjoy it, then that’s probably a bonus.

What happened to taking responsibility for their actions?

I agree. The worst exemption to make. There is no benefit to society.
It makes no sense, except that someone (not most) will make some money from it.

No benefit to society?
What about the thousands of support staff that are out of work because their industry is shut down - both those directly supported by the clubs, the game, the stadiums, the media and so on.

Why dont you want people to return to work?

I can see an interesting philosophical point coming up here. Sport players neither weave nor spin. They may toil, but to no specific community benefit. That said, they indirectly provide employment to many. Essentially, they are a product of an industry and the industry relies on them.

According to ABC24 this morning, SA Health has refused any quarantine exemptions for the Crows or Port Power if they go to Victoria to play, and no interstate AFL teams can play in SA without 14 days quarantine on arrival.

I thought I heard something slightly different on ABC RN local SA news at 6am but I may have misheard due to being still half asleep - I thought they said that the Crows and Port Power would be allowed modified quarantine to play in Victoria "on a FIFO basis".

I've been thinking for a while that if covid19 kicks off again in SA it will likely be via the AFL (kicks off, see what I did there? :p). We're down to 1 active case here.

I think they are working on a fly in, go to play the game, fly out again with minimal time spent in that environment. Of course whether they can get flights is another issue. Maybe they will have to greyhound bus it! 😂

Just to be clear, it’s not IF, it’s WHEN covid will ‘kick back off’ in SA. We all need to wrap our heads around this quick smart. People are deluded I’m afraid if they think the virus isn’t coming back.

Which leads back to the AFL teams, they just need to follow the rules of the day I’m afraid.

But I suspect it won’t be long before the rules are relaxed for everyone anyway.

Given the recent trend in the number of unknown local transmission cases I agree.

One would now need to question that given what cases there are currently in Australia whether the current state border controls are achieving anything positive . They certainly have numerous negative affects.

Apart from the low number of cases testing is now more abundant everywhere, and once Twiggies test arrive even more so. All states have ramped up their contact tracing number and the Covid Safe app is now operational. Covid 19 wards are ghostly in a good way. Governments and the public still need to act like Covid 19 is about, but more and more it is time to re-activate things in a progressive manner, all with appropriate measures in place. I just think that border controls are pretty pointless now and that they should be wound back progressively, if not removed entirely. Covid 19 testing and monitoring needs to be maintained and in some ways ramped up as this is vital to reactivation, so that any unknown cases can be jumped on.

PS: International border controls apart from an ANZ/Pacific Island Bubble need to remain in pace.

Apparently some of them have said they can’t have a flu vac due to “religious reasons”. Hopefully the children are having vaccinations and then are able to go to school. But what sort of religious reasons could there be not to have vaccinations?

SA Health refused to give the SA AFL teams access to modified quarantine restrictions to play football interstate. I wonder of the Crows recent event made that decision much easier.

Yes that's what ABC local radio news said this morning. It only took them 24 hours to catch up with what ABC 24 was saying yesterday :p

Good decision IMO.
