Hi anyone had any luck getting full refund of the annual fee when threatening to cancel the card.

I too had the points cap confirmed over phone today and had the annual fee waived. Still had to pay the additional card holder fee of $29 however. I'm not quite in a position to cancel that card.

Old cards are subject to points capping from March.

Strange that they haven't advised everyone .. well maybe not…..

Did they tell you a date ?
I have a big payment to put through.. ( and then I'm probably gonna cancel)

Yes, it happens in March. Go for it asap.

I sent them an email asking what was going on.

Aksherley.. they probably can't just vary the terms capriciously anyway.
There is a contract.. we do stuff and they do stuff and we both comply with an agreement.
The agreement MAY be able to be varied , but not without appropriate advice and procedural fairness.
A pro rata refund of fees would be appropriate if , by variation , the card ceases to meet the needs of the client .. for one… :-)

Very grumpy this am .. they just caught me for an overlimit fee.. thirty bucks.. fair enough .. but interest on the whole daily balance from the start of the last billing period is usurious.
Collecting points was useful once upon a time .. not anymore...

It's starting to look like the move from HSBC to Macquarie was not such a good idea. The fee increase is not huge but the failure to waive fees for the "early askers" must have resulted in a large number of terminations and the points cap will no doubt see more cancelled cards. It's a bit late to waive fees now when the other "enhancements" are out of the bag. Woolies needs to re-examine its card strategy quicksmart.

I rang yesterday to cancel the card, as I've moved across to a fee-free packaged St George Amplify VISA Signature, with a sign on bonus.

Not only did Macquarie offer to waive the annual fee, they also started spruiking all the benefits I'd get, including a 1.99% balance transfer and free travel insurance...too late in my eyes, the steep increase in the annual fee and the addition of the partner card fee was too much.

Even though the St George card only earns 0.75 points per $ domestically, the sign on bonus and the annual birthday bonus should go some way to making up for the decrease in earn rate.

Yes, but whats the downside to harvesting the signup bonus on the St George card then going back to EDR for higehr earn (if they give fee free)?

Since when this card starts offering free travel insurance?? I doubt the staff really knows what he/she was talking about.

I agree WXXNXS.

Burmans, it was all too little, too late in my eyes. The benefits of the card, apart from the earn rate, weren't anywhere near what you'd expect from a "platinum" card. They only promised to waive the annual fee, not the partner card fee.

The sign on bonus and annual birthday bonus will cover the reduction in earn in the first year, and go close in subsequent years, plus I don't have to talk to a call centre in the Philippines every year to get the fee waived, or there's ever a problem.

And not only that, St George points can convert to Krisflyer points and many people would say 0.825 KF points are worth similar or maybe even more than 1 QF point

SO had already changed his direct debits over from WWEDR to his new ANZ Visa with the 50K sign on bonus so had nothing to lose if they said no & they reversed the annual fee which was charged last month.

Renewal date for me is next month so I called to cancel the card today.
Operator asked me why and I told her due to points capping, which she definitely knew about.
As I am a great customer (her words!), she waived the fee for this year.
I guess 2000 points a month on the card is OK for the next 12 months.
I wonder if they will notice the drop in spend on the card from 30k to 2k per month?
