Yes, built by Baldwin Lima in Ohio, known as a Mikado because of it's wheel arrangement 2-8-2, two wheels on the pony truck, 8 driving wheels and 2 wheels on the trailing truck.

I really enjoyed the youtube vision Bindibuys linked in post #56. Especially the sound.

Matt,

mini OzEire and I would love to do the Goulburn to Sydney trip in the morning, but the whole day will probably be too much for him. Will be great to meet some AFFers at Sydney too.

Looking forward to it !

Once I have the times for that section of the move i'll let you know. the morning section might even involve a bit of plane spotting as will use that to swap out a loco at the container park near QANTAS Drive. So take the BAMs out there, swap locos before it heads into Central for the Gosford section.

Room booked for the Saturday night. Looking forward to this.

Count me in for two tickets. How do I organize it?

Eggsbenedict, I think, based on past experience, you just did! ;)

Just turn up at the published time for boarding and all should be OK. As BAM1748 has stated, he will be doing a collection for a charitable cause, but there should be plenty of space to go around in the carriage(s). I'm sure BAM1748 would let us know if there are any potential overcrowding issues.

That's the answer, plenty of space, just need the the numbers for the drinks service, i.e. to make sure we have anough!

Once we get closer to time and a few responses here will have the answer.

Hi Matt, I've only just started to look at this, particularly the destination and the route, and would love to join you again albeit for one way only - given I've never been to the Central Coast I'm thinking of spending the night at Hawkesbury River (any suggestions?) and head back to Sydney the following day (it's only $2.50 on an Opal card)...

There is a small motel across from the Angler's Rest pub which does the job, have stayed there myself and no issues.

All, just a quick one, all good for the Saturday trip.

Also, there is possibly an opportunity for a Sunday run to Kiama, would leave Sydney at 8am and not back until 8pm with a 4 hour layover. Just wanting to gauge the interest to see if worthwhile.

The Saturday trip is a private train as in past years but Sunday we'd be attaching to another train.

I'm just doing the homework, if anyone needed to fly home Sunday I'd suggest it would be smarter to think about Monday morning. It will be steam hauled by 3642 and 5917 which leaves plenty of scope for late running !

As I'm yet to book a flight down ad prices are skyrocketing, I'm likely out for this one, but if something comes up that allows me to attend I'll be sure to let you know :(

You'll be missed. I'm sure once under way we will have got over it though. :D

$139 OOL-SYD on JQ (starter) and $119 SYD-OOL on QF (or less on JQ/VA)

I think chicka would argue she has to come too... and then we need to book a hotel... or you need to get a second room for us! :p

Or you can stay overnight at Hawkesbury River then travel on an Opal card all the way back to the NSW border for $2.50+?

Not quite - Opal only extends to Central Coast/ Hunter Valley - after that it's paper NSW TrainLink fares.

That said if staying overnight at Hawkesbury River, a train to Newcastle (well Hamilton) and cab to NTL might be an option for samh004 and chicka, with flights to BNE (many) and OOL (JQ in afternoon - currently $119)
