Another dress code question - Qantas First Lounge

Hey there, getting very excited about my upcoming trip with my girlfriend to Sth America and the World Cup!
We are flying out from Sydney to Santiago - and my father has given me 2 Qantas First Lounge Passes - extremely excited about this. It's one hell of a way to start our trip. As my girlfriend and I are relatively young (28) and travelling in economy, we both want to be comfortable for the flight to Santiago, I am just slightly worried about the dress code for the first lounge.

I had a read over the previous thread from 2011 (I can't post a link because I haven't posted over 10 times on this forum)

And opinions differ quite alot between users. I was wondering if opinions have changed since 2011.

Obviously we are not going to look like bums (no rips in our jeans etc) but I was wondering what your thoughts are about wearing thongs? Will this be frowned upon? I don't want to upset anybody - or worse, be denied access.

Cheers

I'm going out on a limb here but I don't think it's a problem if either you or your girlfriend wear thongs.
Personally I think it's slightly more socially acceptable for pretty feet with polished toenails but that's my own opinion.
I hope you both have a fantastic experience and travel in whatever is comfortable for you :)

I have seen shorts, thongs and t-shirt (or maybe even singlet, can't recall). All on the same chap in MEL F, so I don't imagine you would be refused entry. However, given it is something you're very much looking forward to, is it worth taking the risk? I don't have a problem with others wearing thongs etc. but wouldn't dean of wearing them myself - a sudden need to evacuate the plane over Tarmac or wreckage or broken glass is much better done with shoes on. :)

It was probably me.

I pretty much always wear shorts and thongs weather permitting. Have done so well over 100 times now in Flounges all over the world with no issues anywhere.

It's not an issue at all. And despite some of the chat you'll see here, in my experience you'll be treated pleasantly by everyone encountered. Enjoy!

As tuapekastar says decent footwear are a necessity in the event of an evacuation. The thought of being held up whilst evacuating but someone wearing thongs just irks me.

I cannot see how thongs are worse than any other open toe footwear. It's all just perception. Many women's summer fashion shoes are little different to thongs in both coverage and for safety in which case heels are probably worse than thongs.

I would ban anyone wearing a replica watch though!

BassDog - DONT wear thongs. I don't think there is any reason to wear them (into the F Lounge).
Wear something nice and smart and it will make the visit even more special.
However, someone wearing thongs wouldn't upset me as much as the TWO BLOODY KIDS RUNNING around the Mel F lounge as we speak. Are you for real???
Whenever my parents took me out somewhere nice, they always said "restaurant manners please".

How about replica wallets?

Not as significant an indiscretion because they are not generally on public display, though there are those who like to flash them around...in such cases a banning might be appropriate.

I always wear shorts and birkenstock sandals when I travel. I'm 6ft9in and 180+ kgs so I usually need to be as comfortable as possible.

The usual AFF 'knee distance to back of the seat in front' picture would be impressive.

Do you have a fetching tattoo of <can't recall what is actually was now> on your lower right leg? If so, it may well have been you. :)

OP, I'd care less about what other pax might think and more about whether your dress will cause denial of entry by the lounge managers. The fact that you are using entry pass (v/s QF or OneWorld Status) to access the lounge will, albeit subconsciously, play into the decision; and with that background, IMO, I'd refrain from wearing thongs or "beachwear" in general.

Unless travelling for work, I travel in what's comfortable; which usually translates to jeans/khakis + polo or jeans/khakis + jumper and comfortable shoes. Occasionally (especially on PM departures) I will shower and get changed in the lounge into something more comfortable to wear on the flight if I'm planning to sleep at wheels up.

As someone who wears a suit+tie to work during the week, my "sunday best" is a clean pair of jeans and a polo shirt/jumper.

Take that, purists.

Wholeheartedly agree with everything in the above post. The days of dressing up for First Class have gone along with traveling in steerage and porters.
