Allow me to go totally OT here but the most bizarre spectacle I witnessed in the F Lounge was a year or so back, sitting with a colleague sipping bubbles awaiting QF1.
A large 20 something guy, shorts, t-shirt, baseball cap turned backwards entered the lounge, sat down adjacent to us at the window chairs and proceeded to eat a massive box of chicken nuggets and a large Big Mac meal. Less than 5 minutes later QF 11 was called and off he went leaving the detritus behind.
Fortunately he wasn't wearing thongs
Plenty of small minded people out there. Look no further than threads like this for evidence.
As someone posted earlier, perhaps it is a generational thing, but for my generation, thongs can form part of a perfectly acceptable outfit for most occasions except a wedding or funeral.
I think it is generational. I'm an uneducated, ill mannered sort of chap in his late forties and my valet would not allow me to be seen dead in thongs in the lounge.
Worryingly if the early 30's generation are OK with thongs* I shudder at what is to come from those in the late teens.
*I'm in the couldn't give a stuff what people where in the lounge bracket, I'm far to busy with my face in a glass of booze to notice.
When those in their late teens start gaining access to the F lounge we'll be discussing "should I remove my facial piercings" and "should I tuck my stretched earlobes into my pants"
Having said that, my earlier comments still stand!
We seem to be around the same age and I can categorically say that you do not speak for our generation.
If you wouldn't wear it to a decent restaurant then you shouldn't be wearing it in the F Lounge and thongs should definitely not be worn in either.
Why do we constantly compare airport lounges to decent restaurants?
Why should dress standards in a lounge be any different to the terminal?
We are given additional benefits in the lounge to reward loyalty to the airline or as a thanks for helping to prop up the bottom line; not because you have a better dress sense than your fellow passengers.
The dress standards aren't any different to the terminal. You are more than welcome to wear whatever you feel comfortable in for the flight.
The answer to the OP's question is: "Yes, shorts and thongs are perfectly acceptable and welcome in any F lounge. As is a tuxedo. Or whatever else you can wear on a plane."
The rest is just judgmental BS about personal preference. I wouldn't worry about it.
Because you are served decent food & beverage in a far more pleasant environment than the rest of the terminal and the lounge itself is more comparable to a decent restaurant than the rest of the terminal.
Just because you want to wear thongs everywhere except weddings and funerals (really? You wear them to work and out to clubs too?) doesn't make them appropriate dress.
Ultimately it's up to Qantas to decide whether they want to create an enforceable dress code or not but I bristled at the suggestion that somehow everyone our age thinks this is ok when that's clearly not the case.

LOL.. Emo vs Goth sections of the lounge.
If you hang around for any length of time you will find there are two hot buttons - dress codes and children in lounges/J and F. .Wow - this thread really blew up. Crazy.
Some 'interesting' opinions here - but some really good valid points. Both my girlfriend and myself are respectful, well mannered people, and judging by some of the comments here - this seems to be the issue - having respect for others in the way you act.
Thanks everyone for your comments! I am looking forward to the FLounge as a starting off point, and I am really looking forward to my trip!!
Can't we talk about what defines a frequent flyer? If you hang around for any length of time you will find there are two hot buttons - dress codes and children in lounges/J and F. .
Forgot that one. Can't we talk about what defines a frequent flyer?
I saw something very similar last month, at the far end of the lounge. A man was getting into a McDonald's meal with much gusto. I'm usually pretty good at remaining unflustered but this was one of the few times I was agape and my jaws almost literally dropped. I just thought if you're going to buy and eat that, why come into the F lounge??*
* A nice place to sit could be the answer but I was still dumbfounded...
