Another dress code question - Qantas First Lounge

The days of dressing up for First Class have gone along with traveling in steerage and porters.

'Steerage' area is defined on Wikipedia as "passengers travelling on the cheapest class of ticket, and offered only the most basic amenities, typically with limited toilet use, no privacy, and poor food."
Sound familiar?

Not to mention that QF First does have porters...

To the new age purists, Birkenstocks are dress thongs (I should know, my wife has a collection) :o. I agree with Princess Fiona, pedicured feet with painted toenails can look very fetching, particularly on shapely (female) legs :D [sorry, painted toenails on male legs just aren't the same :o ], however I question their appropriateness at a FLounge.

As a product of the 60's and a middle class upbringing, there are traditions that I feel should be retained. You won't find me in sandals or thongs in any airport or on a plane. No, not even OOL, MCY, CNS, ASP, DRW or AYQ. Closed shoes period.

Judging people's fashion decisions when traveling is something from a bygone era. As long as a person is reasonably covered up and conducting themselves politely then it's no one else's business. I think the lounge managers generally adopt this view as well. I dislike thongs and don't wear them but I don't care if other people do and I certainly don't care about ripped jeans. My skins a bit thicker than that.

I have worn strappy shoes in the Flounge (with painted nails), but I think that's a much nicer look than thongs. And this from someone who's worn thongs in a domestic lounge. Better to be a little overdressed rather than risk being turned away.

Be comfortable for the plane, thongs are just not practical and I always worry that someone stupid is going to run over my toes with their suitcase or better still trip over my feet you run better in shoes.
Enjoy your F lounge experience I hope it lives up to your expectations.:)

Allow me to go totally OT here but the most bizarre spectacle I witnessed in the F Lounge was a year or so back, sitting with a colleague sipping bubbles awaiting QF1.
A large 20 something guy, shorts, t-shirt, baseball cap turned backwards entered the lounge, sat down adjacent to us at the window chairs and proceeded to eat a massive box of chicken nuggets and a large Big Mac meal. Less than 5 minutes later QF 11 was called and off he went leaving the detritus behind.
Fortunately he wasn't wearing thongs :p

I'm sure he first had a look at the menu and then ran back to the terminal to get some real food to bring into the lounge:lol:

I am taking that as a compliment, I rarely pass for 20 something these days, and those nuggets were delicious! :p

There is a huge difference between 'boganwear' (singlet/shorts/thongs) and Sunday best.

Shoes, jeans and shirt, for air travel are fine. I do it regularly.

You are making an assumption about my definition of Sunday best.

I was once in the old F lounge in SYD around 2004 or before and (sir now but not then) Peter Jackson was walking around in shorts and no shoes and I thought it looked very poor.

Do his feet look like these ;)

I too agree with the above. Something comfortable, clean and tidy with shoes will suffice no matter which lounge you have access to; lets face it, if you have paid for first class then there shouldn't be too much fuss. HOWEVER.....if you are travelling behind the curtain and only getting into the F lounge because someone has given you a free pass, then for goodness sake, make an effort. Thongs are not acceptable in most restaurants and rightly so. Too many geezers do not look after themselves, not washing hands on leaving the Gents, so why would they wash their feet; they might have to bend down!

I recall a certain Irish celebrity a few years ago sticking his cruddy feet between the seats in front of him. The passengers in front complained of the 'very' offensive smell and the FSD asked him politely to move them. Following his abusive outburst he did, but only because he was advised someone in blue would be waiting for him the other end if he continued.

The F and J lounges are clubs and most clubs have rules and I'd be happy to get back to the days when everyone has to make an effort otherwise stay away: including the HiVisites and the screaming kids. Yes, I have three and they NEVER ran riot and annoyed people on the ground or in the air.

I saw something very similar last month, at the far end of the lounge. A man was getting into a McDonald's meal with much gusto. I'm usually pretty good at remaining unflustered but this was one of the few times I was agape and my jaws almost literally dropped. I just thought if you're going to buy and eat that, why come into the F lounge??*

* A nice place to sit could be the answer but I was still dumbfounded...

Sorry - I always wear sandals - nice ones and definitely not thongs and I see nothing wrong with them I am not comfortable in shoes and only wear them in winter cos you have to in Canberra. Given I am generally travelling in F via a paid ticket out of personal funds I am going to be comfortable and I do not believe that I am in any way offensive. (Although given the comments here I must be wrong - seriously though - who spends their time looking at people's feet and judging!)

My mother always said that looking at people's shoes tells you a lot about them. ( words to that effect) and that people judge you by your footwear.
I guess I have taken on that philosophy.

ill be going through the First Class Lounge before my flight off to Paris in June, cant wait to sample the menu and atmosphere

Plenty of small minded people out there. Look no further than threads like this for evidence.

I appreciate this is now OT but IMHO everyone has personal standards which are a product of their age and upbringing. I do not see how having personal standards and living up to (or discussing) them makes you small minded.

It doesn't.

Judging someone else based on their fashion sense does. As would, say, judging someone based on their accent.

There's lots of really nice, really intelligent, really industrious people out there who don't care about what they (or anyone else) are wearing.
