Another VA low point - denied meet lounge access

If you don't like it, don't read it. Pretty easy really. If you don't like my posts, ignore them. In fact I even believe there is a feature where you can add my addy to be invisible to you so you won't be bothered at all by them, but in the meantime if I decide VA has made a stupid rash decision, I'll post it!

By that logic Virgin should ignore your post if they don't like it?

Virgin have ignored posts like this for some time, so I'd agree with you on that score. I posted the experience for AFFers not Virgin.

Just like they ignored his request for special treatment.
No, just like they ignored their previous policy or they followed directions from higher up about the policy being withdrawn. Just because you were not aware of these unwritten benefits does not give you the right to belittle those that did know of them.

Here is my 2 cents worth.

The issue I think is when does discretion become unpublished benefit? After reading the thread. It would appear the t & c doesnt allow access, but due to staff using their discretion allowing access to lounge as others have been allowed, does it then become an expectation that lounge will be allowed all the time? Then does it come as shock when staff follow rules to the letter?

We dont know what instructions from lounge management that have occurred as a result of the use of discretion. I expect that tracking of all lounge access is done by some bean counter in head office and maybe lounge staff have been spoken to later re allowing access when strictly really shouldn't.

Now it appears this has occurred on this occasion. Staff followed rules and came as shock to poster.
I think also perhaps with benefit of hindsight (Which is always 20-20) the author may have chosen a different heading.

Don't worry. Belittling is their specialty.

The debate in this thread is good. What I forgot to write yesterday was the lady at reception said "It's our policy...." when assuring me that it's ok to guest as long as someone is flying Virgin that day. Why it's an unpublished benefit is not quite clear. Maybe to allow them better control in times where lounge is full.

Now I have one wish left. I wish the people that love to belittle go and find another forum. Debating is good. There's no place for belittling.

Not special treatment... I fact I have done the same as swanning_it in the past when I was a plat, they let me in the lounge to wait for the inbound flight

Good point. If this was the case is it not better to publish this benefit and include a disclaimer such as 'subject to availability'. Then everyone knows its a benefit however the request could be denied subject to discretion at the lounge? If one is denied access they take it on the chin and move on?

Remaining unpublished allows the benefactor to easliy remove it . "Easy come Easy go"

An entitlement is very difficult to remove without heavy criticism.

Whereas the removal of an unpublished benefit is criticised by those who knew of it, but as we've seen in this thread, staunchly defended by those who, through ignorance of the benefit, missed out on it.

Platinums should have unlimited use of the lounge regardless of whether they are travelling. The difference between gold and platinum is so small that things like this should really be the added benefit.

Every time I read Unpublished benefit, I think of Double Secret Probation. It only exists if you can prove it and the proof is in the writing.

No. It exists whilst they provide it.

Agreed. Especially about people wearing thongs

I never said 'all' FFers I have seen are dishonest. You changed my words to that.

Even though you appear to believe this thread is all about you, it isn't. I've already answered this accusation here

I hate unpublished benefits. I frequently drop off friends at the airport who don't have status and I'm always able to guest them into the lounge even though I'm not flying due to the unpublished benefit. I'm waiting for the day a lounge dragon isn't aware of the unpublished benefit and I won't have anything to point to because the benefit is unpublished.

Any link to this, so I can see the context in which it was written. It seems to me that this would be something of a loophole. From what I have seen of the frequent flyer crowd is that they are not really always the most honest in trying to get something, and many would tell straight out lies claiming they were meeting someone, when they really just wanted a free beer.....

That should get a reaction - this could be more fun than a back yard swing!

Some comments are so transparently stirring that they fail.

I never said 'all' FFers I have seen are dishonest. You changed my words to that.

But you have never said you have seen any honest frequent flyers.
Besides your statements have absolutely nothing to do with the OPs opening post in this thread.
I have to presume you are just here to stir the pot with absolutely nothing concrete to add to the diuscussion.
Please stop.
