A first for me yesterday.

I was offered and granted 4pm checkout at the hotel I had yesterday (graciously offered as I was "almost" Bonvoy Platinum - one stay away 👍).

However I returned to my room at about 3:40/3:45pm to freshen up and change. Key got me into my room, and noticed the room had been made up. Strange. Then noticed my belongings (toiletries, some bathers and shorts T/shirt, sandals,) were gone. Eventually got through to reception and told someone had checked me out (but door key was still working?). I asked about my belongings, and told they would check with housekeeping, but I had to be out of the room in 5 mins.

No doubt Swiss efficiency.

No apology, no acknowledgement. Didn't get the chance to have a quick shower and change into my shorts/T-shirt for the train ride.

And I also discovered a 30ml bottle of EDT missing. They looked for it, but "must have been thrown out" . Waiting for some follow up today, but not holding my breath, the manager actively hiding in the back room and avoiding me. [oddly I decided to take my passport out of the safe that morning and take with me to the office].

Anything like this happened to anyone?

That is horrible. You would think they would at least try to phone before just emptying the room.

Was your bag/ suitcase still in there?

I was only on an overnight trip, so I didn't have a suitcase and had my backpack with me, but to save carrying everything to the office had my dirty clothes from the day before and some other casual clothes and sandals just sitting on the desk + toiletries in the bathroom. That might have been the problem - perhaps people leave clothes and toiletries behind all the time 🤷‍♂️

Will definitely follow up with either the GM (if I can find his email address) &/or Marriott customer service. We have a company rate there, and would have been staying again (and have stayed several times before).

As soon as you went ‘swiss’, I went ‘uh-huh’. lol

Reminds me of a story about one of my friends who had a friend stay at their apartment block (in Switzerland). Communal laundry. Laundry had to be finished by 6pm. Friend got there 6.05. All laundry removed. Nowhere to be found. Turned up months later with a note ‘laundry closes at 6’ :D

Swiss? Which hotel would this be?

wow that's pretty shocking tbh. i'd be livid if my stuff just disappeared like that. definitely push for compensation, maybe even a free stay?

I'd be livid. This has never happened to me even when I've been very late back to my room lol. During my uni student hotel employee days we would always call a guest before moving things out, and everything not in the garbage bins would be stored.

Have had the opposite. Keycard wouldn't open room, but our stuff was still there.

This was a 7 night stay at a Hilton in NYC. 3 nights were on points and 4 nights cash.

They "ended" the stay in their system after the first 3 nights, locking us out of the room. Fortunately we had tried to return to the room just after lunch, so we were able to sort things out with reception before they "packed up" our room.

What hotel ?

At the holiday inn at Zurich airport a few years ago I was checked in at hotel, got key card, opened room.door to find it occupied. No real apology but room upgrade provided after I said it was "not on" . Swiss efficiency indeed..,,😜

Not a Swiss story:

I was once on holiday with my family on Hamilton Island. We were relaxing in our hotel room when the door suddenly opened and an old couple walked in with their luggage.

Turns out they were given our room at check in. I went downstairs with them to explain the situation. The reception staff were most apologetic.

In hindsight, I should have asked for a complimentary stay.

Plenty of times I’ve been given a late checkout but housekeeping knock on the door expecting me to be gone and the room empty. I have to tell them I’ve got a late check out and they ask what time.

So clearly the communication between front desk and housekeeping is lacking. If your keys still worked sounds like it’s a housekeeping issue.

Which is why I always put out the "Do Not Disturb" card!

It's all hotel and system dependent.

Depending which hotel and which systems they are running will govern how well the front desk and housekeeping departments are integrated. Currently most housekeeping departments are not instantly updated with front desk so if you request a late check out after a certain time it will not be updated on the following days housekeeping reports.

With regards to the keys still working after a late check out request this is normal. The key and housekeeping systems are (mostly) separate.

Most hotels won’t grant late checkouts until the morning of so that pretty much confirms that housekeeping never know.

Yes the point about the keys is what I was saying, front desk may have given you a late checkout which is why your key still works but housekeeping are in the dark. If you don’t get a late checkout, most hotels automatically check you out and disable keys whether or not you have left the room.
