Mmm maybe grab whatever opportunities while you can. Went to Moscow a few years ago just on a whim as an extension to a holiday in Vietnam (cheap VN Airlines flight). Fantastic place, and felt quite unreal (brought up in the cold war)

I had to cancel Kamchatka, Chad, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia in 2020.

With the current situation in E Europe, not much chance of ever getting to many of those.

One region of the world that is a substantial hole for me and that was in my dreams is West Africa.

The problem with going to slightly off-grid places with advancing age and the lingering spectre of Covid is getting travel insurance, at least at a reasonable price.

I'm sticking with domestic travel and not even thinking about anywhere overseas for the time being.

Don't rule Georgia out. I don't think there is anything happening in Europe atm to affect a visit, and if you are fortunate you might be able to do an open jaw stopover there as I have done on the way to AMS. Even easier if you are flying to FRA. There was no additional cost for me at that time.

Sure - but for me it's not a must-do on its own. My habitual method of int travel up to 2019 was 15 successive annual DONEx, where I fitted in a bunch of independent and tour-group activities over a c. 6-16 week period.

Basically, I don't fly int point-to-point, so I need a well-opened situation to return to my ideal.

I don't see that happening any time soon - and age is catching up.

I mean, anything's possible technically. Antarctica is up there but the logistics are tricky. I'd love to visit BIOT (Diego Garcia), but that's very unlikely. St Helena would be tricky, Pitcairn, Falkland Islands too (I'd kind of like to visit all the remaining British Overseas Territories, to be honest).

I even managed Svalbard from Australia, so nowhere that flights can easily (and I include a million connections within the definition of easy) reach are really off limits, some are less likely than others.

When I lived in Europe I visited the majority of countries there, but some of the 'Stans are unlikely. I'm glad I visited Ukraine pre-this situation. I actually didn't think much of it at the time, and said I'd only go back to visit Chernobyl/Pripyat, but maybe once this is over and done with I'll try, if nothing more than to support their economy (but visiting Bosnia & Herzegovina and seeing the relics of the '90s conflict and its history was great).

Insurance aside I wouldn’t rule out Georgia, Moldova, Armenia and Azerbaijan. I’ve definitely got the Moldova wine trail on my list for next year if possible.

Edit: Didn’t see your other reply above before I wrote that. You could Break a habit of a lifetime and just pop over to that region and spend a couple of weeks tooling around.

Other than that you could do like I’m going to do next April and May, a good old-fashioned “return to” Western Europe trip by car. France, Germany and England. Nice and relaxing and relatively unexciting.

As I will be going to Cuba (or have been to Cuba within the last 11 years) I am no longer welcome to even transit through a US port or airport without making an appointment and formally applying in person in advance for a Visa at one of the embassies or consulates in Australia (not one in Brisbane) each and every time I wish to transit or arrive in the US.

Rerouting some future flights to avoid any US state or territory. Not going through that Visa expense and rigmarole when there are so many places to see and so many ways to get there.

A B1/B2 visa is valid for 5 years; you don't have to get one for every visit/transit.

I used to have business interests there. Beautiful old city with great food influenced by every race that transited the borders over many centuries. They say Georgia is the birthplace of wine and there is plenty of good wine to choose from. You should not feel unsafe walking the streets at night either.

Will be reading this closely. I mentioned in my Egypt TR that I was looking at ways to visit Syria . I’m already in the USA’s Bad Books through visiting Iran so my B1B2 Visa will still serve me well.
