ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure Card

From the ANZ Rewards Program T&C's.....

14. In the event your card account is closed, any Reward Points that remain unused must be used within 90 days of the date of closure. Reward Points that remain unused after that period will be cancelled.
Must have missed that, thank you. I'm not sure what to do...

Applied for this card at the beginning of the year. Only just received the 150k points to my ANZ Rewards account. If I now cancel the card, will I lose access to my ANZ Rewards account? Ideally I would like to cancel the card so that I can start the exclusion period, but given that Krisflyer points expire and given the suspension of transfers to Velocity, there aren't too many appealing options at this point.
Unless you have another Anz rewards card .

I contacted ANZ and got a bit different message. Looks like we will be forced to keep the card another year to get a refund?

If you no longer wish to claim your included complimentary flight for the current account year, we are able to process a partial refund of $130 of your Annual Account Fee, reducing it from $170 to $40. The rewards program service fee of $55 for each card holder and any additional cardholder fees will continue to apply as reward points will continue to be earned.

If you agree to this once off Annual Account Fee reduction, all of your complimentary flight benefits and Virgin lounge passes will be forfeited for the current account year. This includes any existing bookings, travel credits and any unbooked entitlements you may have."

We can process this partial refund of $130.00 of your annual fee only after your annual fee charge appear on your credit card statement. If you are interested in this refund, please contact ANZ once the annual fee charge appears on your credit card account.

My next annual fee is due in around a month, and I'm too deciding whether to keep the card. If they waived next year's annual fee, I probably would. But I can't say I've really got any value out of the card this year, unfortunately.

I'm still not sure what I'm going to redeem this year's free flight for. It's almost impossible to plan travel more than a week in advance at the moment, but to redeem the free VA flight you need to book at least 60 days ahead.

I have not redeemed the flight as well and the fee is due in 2 months. They basically said I would get the current year refund of $130 but I have to keep the card for another year. I edited the post and added the full text. It doesn't make sense to me. If I cancel the card and forfiet $130 refund, I can still redeem the most expensive flights and get lounge passes which will probably cost them even more.

FWIW I was told yesterday that I could change my booked flight for a date up to 6 months in advance for the same route, without charge. Beyond 6 months could be done but change fee & fare difference would likely apply.

Let's see how February goes. I am no longer a cardholder but the same policy seemed to apply to me as to others.

I'm in the same boat with annual fee due next month and not having booking my current year flight. I have no plan, so may just book something say in March and worry about tailoring it later. Then if I renew, I'll have another flight to worry about what to do with.

The points earn on this card is not very good at all, moreso once you go over 2k spend per month, however the free fx transactions charges is quite good (along with the flight when it can be put to use).

I'll probably stay.

I called up today and was told this too. I am able to change the date for flight with no further costs, but to change the destination/after 6 months it was extra, the option I looked at was $68 extra to change the destination and date until 9 months away.

I'm not sure what to do, travel, even in Australia is an unknown still. If the option to fly overseas opens up I'd prefer to do that rather than commit to an Australian holiday.

This card is worthless now, it went from being the best in the market to the worst -
Effective 1 December 2020, the following air travel benefits associated with the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures credit card account (currently available per account year where eligibility criteria have been met) will no longer be available as a feature of the account:

  • One complimentary Virgin Australia domestic return flight
  • Two complimentary Virgin Australia domestic lounge passes
In recognition of the changes, the annual account fee for the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures credit card will be reduced from $170 to $65. The $55 Rewards Program fee will still apply, therefore the total annual account fee will be $120.

How did you happen to stumble upon that information? I haven't received an email.

My anniversary is next month. I think I'll just close prior. Not sure if I can access my stash of ANZ rewards points after it is closed - that is unclear on that page (probably elsewhere though but haven't looked). If I have to transfer them now I'll be missing out on the 15 to 30% offers that historically occurred (no guarantee of that still occurring however)

Well, it was a great card while it lasted. Bit of a shame, I especially liked that it earned reward points and waived the foreign currency fee, that was very handy. Not many rewards cards do that. But it's not worth keeping just for that benefit.

I saw it on another site that the benefits are changing. It is definitely not worth renewing. I agree it sucks that you might not get a chance to withdraw with a bonus offer. So disappointed with the news ;-(

I agree, the card was great when international travel was possible.

I only wish I’d redeemed the flights before COVID. My flights have been cancelled and changed and now they’ve changed the route without so much as an email so it goes via Melbourne rather than direct! Fortunately the flights are a way off but I suspect I won’t be using them. You’d think that with borders closed that they wouldn’t charge such prohibitive fees for destination changes when it’s impossible to enter the destination state.

Has anyone been able to get travel bank credit for cancelled flights? I was only give the option to change the date.

Agree. Whilst you can get free cards that waive the foreign currency fee such as Bankwest and 28Degrees they will take a hit. I have a UBank Savings account I use as main transaction account which is also a debit card and also waives foreign currency fees - no rewards points of course.

On rewards points, this card had a pretty crumby rate, particularly above $2k per month.

Well basically the product has been discontinued right? I mean if you go to ANZ's site, it doesn't seem to exist anymore. Also this link explains the changes:

Yes, it hasn't been available for new customers since VA went into administration months ago.

The change is hardly unexpected really, but I was still holding out hope.
My fee is due in a few weeks, so I could actually get another flight out of them before the cut off, but given all the uncertainty it doesn't seem worth it. I'll try and get them to waive the fee totally, but if not I'm going to cancel this one and switch over to another card.

I am surprised they couldn't get a deal with the new VA owners to keep the benefit going, I guess ANZ must have felt it's just too hard to keep the flight benefit with the covid-19 situation, but surely they could have think of something else to replace the flight benefit?

As it stands this is easily the worse credit card out there, you are effectively paying $120 for the benefit of not paying FX fees on foreign transactions.

Most likely I will use the flight benefit one last time this year, before cancelling the card for good when the next annual fee is charged.

Interestingly, my annual fee is due in mid-Nov, and I haven't used my flight (or asked for the lounge vouchers) this membership year. Seems like I'll be able to use the existing flight benefit as planned, and with my annual fee falling due in November (which is when the flight benefit gets renewed), I'll have a couple of weeks in between the new flight and lounge being activated, and the December shutoff, in which to make a second booking. Don't mind paying the full fee once more in that case and keep the card until at least November next year before reassessing if the new proposition is worth continuing to pay for. Pre-COVID, I used to go overseas quite regularly, so the 3% fee waiver would have generally saved me more than the old $225 total fee each year. Whether that remains true in 2021 will depend on borders I guess...

Also gives ANZ time to reactivate points transfers to Velocity and hopefully the opportunity to transfer the bulk out with a bonus in play.

Hey guys, long time reader first time poster!

My experience with the Anz Travel Adventures, Last week got charged the annual fee (totally forgot to close it), called up and said i have been stood down from work and waived the whole annual fee no problem. Then noticed the flight had to be booked by end of November, managed to call up and get a flight booked and lounge passes requested, and on top of that managed an upgrade to J with points. But i know of other people who Anz made pay the rewards fee in order to keep the travel benefits, seems pretty inconsistent reading on here. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.
