ANZ Rewards Travel Adventure Card

I called ANZ today and asked for an annual fee refund for the card. The agreed to refund the $220 annual fee portion of the fees, but not the $110 "Rewards" fee. But still, better than nothing and given I paid it back in January it was worth the phone call for sure.

Lucky you, I called ANZ but they refused to refund my annual fee because it was not charged recently, so now it goes to the complaints team, wish me luck.

I chose this card as part of my mortgage so it's "free", hmm what to do...

Good luck!! I didn't do anything in particular, just had a friendly chat with the guy, then made a polite request

Route was SYD-CNS - value $316 (I think this was even on the original e-ticket which was issued). Lounge pass was mailed a week or so after I made the original booking.

thanks, they just told me i would get $160 credit for OOL-SYD thats better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
Heads up for anyone reading, It was a 14 day turnaround on that email, so they are busy.

Our "free" flights are not until October (membership year / annual fees I think is before then), so I've not yet made contact to ask what will be of the velocity rewards cards (myself & partner).

I'm same boat due in October and haven't done anything about this years flight. I could book one and claim a credit later (or fly it) and try to get a portion of Annual Fee returned. Will sit tight to see what happens for now.

Another point. Whilst we may not be travelling O/S to get the free FX fees, you can still get them online when making O/S purchases. We have made quite a bit of savings there in recent times.

Confirming that the $220 credit has shown on my transactions this morning.

I wonder if asking to get the fee refunded will remove the free flight included in the card if Virgin survive?
I don't know if I should call them or just wait, as I am optimistic but I also do not want to lose $220 as well.

I thought the same - but I doubt it.

I don't think they would refund the fee if you have already booked you flight. Similarly I don't think that the fee refund is linked in any way to the benefits of the card, to be honest their systems are probably not integrated well enough to handle that!

I guess now that the refund has occured I could always try to book a flight and see what they say...

Got a survey call from ANZ today. So I told them when they ditched card Hire car insurance, I ditched my cards and their fees. No not interested - mentioned Virgin, and getting a home loan somewhere else. and loan credit scoring - every cards is assumed to be maxxed out in H/L situations. I think banks are panicking as juicy card fees and client contact is dying. Just cant believe some suckers pay annual card fees in this day and age. Given the super withdrawals, I would say pain and defaults are getting closer.

Since you had no sign up annual fee did you received the sign up bonus points ?

I clarified this with them after we refinanced our mortgage to ANZ. I was told you can not double dip. It’s either the waived annual fee through the break free home loan package OR the bonus points through the usual sign up.

I’ve had 2 ANZ credit cards since our refinance and paid the annual fee in order to get the sign up bonus both times.

So I sent an email to ANZ asking to get a refund and that is the answer I just got :

"Thank you for your enquiry regarding your ANZ card account.

If you no longer wish to claim your included complimentary flight for the current account year, we are able to process a partial refund of $130 of your Annual Account Fee, reducing it from $170 to $40. The rewards program service fee of $55 for each card holder and any additional cardholder fees will continue to apply as reward points will continue to be earned.

If you agree to this once off Annual Account Fee reduction, all of your complimentary flight benefits and Virgin lounge passes will be forfeited for the current account year. This includes any existing bookings, travel credits and any unbooked entitlements you may have.

If you would like to proceed with a one-off $130 reduction to your Annual Account Fee please confirm your acceptance by responding to this email. This will appear as $130 credit card statement.

If you would like to retain your current travel entitlements you do not need to respond to this email and those entitlements will remain, however please note that due to current travel restrictions flights are extremely limited.

For all enquiries for existing or future travel bookings please call the ANZ Rewards Centre on 1300 367 763 (Mon to Fri 8am to 8pm AEST excl. national public holidays).

Thank you for banking with us. If you have any other queries about your ANZ card account, please feel free to contact us at any time via SecureMail or by phone on 13 22 73. Overseas customers can call reverse charges from a landline phone by contacting us via the international operator on +61 3 9683 7043 at any time. Please make sure you have your ANZ Visa or MasterCard number handy when you contact us.

Kind regards"

So for now, I will keep the card as it is and monitor the situation.

Had to jump through a couple of hoops on the phone but I just booked using my "free" flight for a MEL-PER trip in September. Hopefully the changes truly are "free" and without rubbish charges on top from ANZ, should I need to change the flight in to October. More likely I can travel then, but with free changes only offered until bookings for travel to September 30, what's the point booking for travel beyond that?

Applied for this card at the beginning of the year. Only just received the 150k points to my ANZ Rewards account. If I now cancel the card, will I lose access to my ANZ Rewards account? Ideally I would like to cancel the card so that I can start the exclusion period, but given that Krisflyer points expire and given the suspension of transfers to Velocity, there aren't too many appealing options at this point.

If I now cancel the card, will I lose access to my ANZ Rewards account?

From the ANZ Rewards Program T&C's.....

14. In the event your card account is closed, any Reward Points that remain unused must be used within 90 days of the date of closure. Reward Points that remain unused after that period will be cancelled.
