Apple Airtags

@Pushka reading one of your earlier posts I ordered a 4 pack and had the free names added so now we will know which one belongs to Mrs&MissM and the spare, I suspect they will come in handy.
That's a great idea. I was in too much of a hurry to get them.

You can of course call them anything you like such as Jane, Fred, Andrew, Matt, or suitcase, handbag, car keys, wallet etc. engraving will help to identify them when they are not in a suitcase etc.
If you are in a hurry such as an impending trip, engraving is quite time consuming.

I was not in a hurry and the free engraving/ embossing by apple at the time of ordering is limited to 4 characters or emojis. I took around a week from ordering to arriving in the mail.

The engraving can be done in a timely manner; I guess its just a matter of how busy there are. Mostly useless for text as only 4 characters, emojis are the norm.

Edit - I see Matt_01 beat me to it :)

Thanks everyone for all advice on airtags - I've ordered a 4-pack for our forthcoming trip to EU.

Mrs C and I have short names so two airtags will have our names and her dog and my cat have names less than 4 letters so we're good (human names on suitcases, pets' names on hand luggage).

We're an android phone closed shop at home, but Mrs C has an iPad pro which she takes with her on trips so we will be able to track our stuff.

Question: a page or two back mention was made of leather airtag holders. Do users attach airtags to outside of cases or do they still work if placed inside a suitcase? Is applying them to outside of case a tag theft risk?

We just placed ours straight IN the suitcase. I wouldn't put them on the outside in case of damage.

I put ours into the zipper pocket most suitcases have but we never use.

Do you find that the tracker works even when buried in a suitcase? I did wonder if they needed to be on the outside to be effective.

Just waiting for Woolies to have bonus points on Apple gift cards again.

Mine have worked fine inside the suitcase.

Yep. I just tracked mine through UK. Always 'visible'.

I have a tag inside a household storage “box” in a warehouse facility - it’s amazing how often people must walk through the warehouse. as it’s rarely more than an hour or two since the tag was last seen.

Re: engraving - we use our initials plus a number e.g. ABC1, ABC2, ABC3 etc.
Definitely have them inside our case, handbag, backpack etc. Why leave them visible and run the risk of someone yanking them off just to be annoying?

I put ours inside the suitcases. Seems to work quit well. My thoughts were if you attach them to the outside, either they will get caught in baggage machinery or stolen by baggage handlers etc. Can get cheap holders from Amazon or EBay.

Having had handles ripped off suitcases I put mine inside a nice new white short sock and pinned with a nappy pin onto the inside pocket. That worked very well.
Good idea. I have mine inside my luggage, wrapped in bubble wrap, in a zippered slot, and they work well. Anyone who puts them outside of their luggage may not have a happy ending.

We were having a discussion about this last night. I put my airtag on the table and a friend was able to get the info with the last three digits of my mobile number. There was also another option to disable the airtag. So if I'm reading this correctly if someone stole my luggage they would just have to disable the airtag and then it's no longer trackable. It was discussed about people being stalked can then disable them.
