If that's the only reason you want an ABN, then no.

Legally, you have to be carrying out a business activity to obtain an ABN. There are penalties involved if the ATO catches you out making a false or misleading statement to obtain an ABN. From the ATO website:

When applying for an ABN it's important that the information you provide is true and correct. Making a false or misleading statement to the Australian Business Register may result in a penalty of up to $10,200.

More on penalties here: https://abr.gov.au/General-information/Making-a-false-or-misleading-statement

Do you really want to take that risk for a few thousand Aquire Points?

I'm also interested to know if it is worth getting an ABN if you don't need to have one.

I'm eligible for one if I want it. But I don't need to have one.

It seems that having an ABN carries some risks. Including "Unlimited Liability: The sole trader has unlimited liability, this means that all the assets of the sole trader (including personal assets) are at risk." Sole Trader Structure | All Business Structure

Is having an ABN, if you don't need to have one, worth it?

I lashed out on some highlighters. $5.00 ish and free delivery good value for $50 join and 20,000 points. Was needing that for two planned upgrade requests.

Getting an ABN these days is becoming much more difficult than in the past. You need to prove you need it.

*** Without giving legal advice *** and take it your own risk *** but I don't believe having an ABN itself brings about the risk you mention, rather its the nature of the business. I don't think a sole trader MUST have an ABN; the web site you liked to says that they may apply. But if someone wants to say different, I couldn't argue strongly.

I was in this situation some years ago and did apply, and got one, but its been irrelevant for some time. Maybe rules have changed.

Corporations have limited liability, as an individual there is no difference whether you have an ABN or not.

You needed to register via the aquire members button on the screen shot I posted earlier.

Thanks. It must match the ABN or something I guess. Which actually makes sense as there's no Aquire number. Although it seems odd still.

If you are collecting and paying GST in the course of your business you should have an ABN. I won't paraphrase so have copied and pasted from a gov site - Register for an Australian Business Number (ABN) | business.gov.au

An Australian Business Number (ABN) is not compulsory, but it does allow you to:

  • facilitate a single Business Activity Statement (BAS)
  • confirm your business identity to others when ordering and invoicing
  • avoid Pay as You Go (PAYG) tax on payments you receive
  • claim Goods and Services Tax (GST) credits
  • claim energy grants credits
  • obtain an Australian domain name.

It will not affect your personal liability, which is something you should be insuring anyway if operating a business.

The Partners came up when you click on that link. The parking was listed towards the end.

Is there an obvious reason why points earned via Q flights are held as pending until 20,000 reached but points from partners and bonus points are awarded immediately?

Also I note on the T&C's that a membership year requires 20,000 flight points to be eligible for membership and that a membership year can be longer than 12 months (eg June 14th 2013 to June 30th 2014).

So while not mentioned I take this as meaning a membership year is financial year based and not joining date based.

I guess it because QF are looking at Acquire as a means to encourage business, not traveller loyalty. 2 different PAX as well. That 20K flight points represents quite a lot of travel - out of the range of most smaller entities.

I am thinking with promotions like this fo 10K/20K, take-up has not been to the level anticipated.

So maybe they will sell Acquire down the line and not the FF package.

They sign up businesses not people. That's a pretty valuable marketing list.

Exactly; that's what QFF has become. You might be a customer of Qantas, but you are now the product for QFF to sell amongst its membership list to businesses. They buy points off Qantas to give to their customers, attracted by the large QFF membership e-mail list.

In theory its win-win, except it greatly inflates the number of points able to be redeemed for flights; more competition for scarce Award or upgrade seats, even from people who hardly ever fly!! (Except what those suckers don't realise is that they've got Buckley's chance of a decent redemption, without QFF status ;) )

If you want to se what Qantas will eventually become, check out Aeroplan . Its what I joined when I started flying Air Canada a lot. Air Canada spun out their FF scheme and now its NOT a FF scheme, but a general points scheme that includes an airline. Air Canada's customers got so piXXed off with it they started Air Canada Altitude where they are starting to pry themselves away from Aeroplan! Then Aeroplan retaliated with Distinction and I still don't understand what the hell that is.

Thread creep apology...first-class service from Staples. My 2 orders placed on Friday afternoon, one at 1525, the other at 1815, both delivered this morning (Monday) 1030. Now all to do is sit-back and wait for ... the next offer. ;)

anyone needs some stationary, or even parking? let me know.

Parking will be a lot easier. I am currently overseas and can't receive any delivery, so rather than just wasting, could put to good use. Just PM me if you want parking today/tomorrow/whenever or stationary and we can take it from there!
