I did research this a fair bit and I decided I was happy to:

And do all the people in that business show us their apps from say the kitchen hands ‘up’, otherwise it is a bit of a flaw in that system. So, not sure that is the way to go.

Yup more than happy for that to be the way it goes.

This is a pandemic. People just need to suck it up.

We aren’t feeding this data to ASIO or the Russian government so all the Karen’s can just calm down and go back to Facebooking their location every 30 minutes :)

But if they want to go to a restaurant, shop in a store next to me I’d prefer they had the app.

And I think it’s a brilliant marketing tool! If David Jones, Westfield etc came out and said ‘We will be checking on entry you have the app installed’ I think those places would be well supported and people would feel safer, come out of hiding, spend money etc and get us out of this crater.

Private organisations could make it a right of entry and I think go for it.

@harvyk (# 488) said: "Basically the vast majority of people who write the laws have no real understanding of data, systems and technology (and routinely ignore those who do)."

This might be the case, but they do understand rights and obligations.

Whilst this is going a little off-topic:

But North Korea really couldn't care less about our rights and obligations, and that's who programmers are up against. From our point of view laws are a funny thing that just kinda get in the way, but do absolutely nothing to protect data.

So to bring it back on topic, COVIDSafe has been designed to be secure, to the point that laws to protect the data are rather meaningless in terms of data protection. They are a warm and fuzzy to make people feel good.

That's why I trust it and have downloaded it. If I found out that the only protection of the data was some "laws" to stop people from misusing it, I probably wouldn't have downloaded it.

Anyone who wants to see how Google (and no doubt others) are tracking our movements, can have a sqizz here. And we rely on a largely unenforceable "privacy agreement" with these online apps to keep our personal data safe.

This represents a really stark difference to the Coivid app which does not capture where you have been, just which mobile phones have been close to you for 15mins or more (which for me so far is only MrsOatek and #2 daughter).

Ah, so it’s not mandatory, but we won’t let you out otherwise.

As best I can tell, it’s stalled at a bit over 3 million installations. It’s going to take a much better sales effort to get it above that.
I thought about this comment over night. Why does it need a Sales effort? Isn’t it enough for us as a community to want to help all the people who are currently out of work to get jobs back? Just knowing the app is a route to that should be enough to have us all racing to download it. It’s just an app we can delete when the mess is over.

or have we become like the yanks and “I am all right Jack” is the only thing that drives us?

Yep, it is a flawed idea. And would give a false sense of security that someone making my salad is virus free.
If we are to get prescriptive it needs to be effective and reciprocal.

No business is going to refuse entry to someone simply because they don't have this app installed.

Customers will be encouraged to shop and dine. Managers will be interested to see their Credit Card, not their app

The number of downloaders, or lack thereof, probably speak for themselves.

I think a ‘sales effort’ and ‘community spirit‘ is sort of synonymous in this scenario. And as we know, there are a huge amount of apathetic people walking around saying what happened?

Please don’t lower us to the level of Americans if that happens I’m out of here :)

My view: I honestly think the numbers in AU are so so low, that (most) people don’t see the point or urgency of this app.

The early adopters have joined the dots - App = return to normal life.

But the slower uptakers have not quite got the message and because there’s not piles of bodies being dumped in mass graves, or neighbours/family members dying (my family in the UK have 3 infections in their street and one death!) - they also don’t see the urgency.

Will be interesting to see the marketing put out to help this group

They just might, given they will need to reduce the number of seats and to get those to come in who might be a little bit wary of venturing out, might be a marketing opportunity for them.

So, with another 5 million, or more, to get to about 40% take-up, I wonder what the Government strategy will be to try and accomplish that, other than what we have already heard?

Full page ads in the papers today.

Maybe the federal government response will be similar to this:
“Something is stirring in the waters of Tokyo Bay. With only the notes of a recently deceased scientist, the Japanese government (all named characters in this movie are some form of politician) must figure out what is going on. Those expecting action may be disappointed. Director Hideaki Anno (who directed the film’s human-focused scenes) delights in exposing the lumbering giant that is Japanese bureaucracy. Every new issue requires a meeting – every new meeting requires changing floors to the appropriate meeting room. Ministers have to be called, experts must be consulted. Meanwhile, Godzilla has come ashore and is destroying the city.” (from Shin Godzilla Review: Bureaucracy and the King of the Monsters, posted on October 20, 2016 by Colin McMahon: Shin Godzilla Review: Bureaucracy and the King of the Monsters)

Yes, quite possibly. 😀

I’m going to write to a few contacts in big businesses that could do this and suggest they use the COVIDSafe app in this way. Play my part :)
And, when entering the restaurant, we can throw in the mandatory DYKWIA.

I am going back to the office next week so I will encourage our staff to get onboard. If we start with our hundred we might be able to influence about 500 Once you bring in all the family members.
Just found out it downloads and registers to ithingies like IPads.

They could have big stickers 📛 with an image of the app printed at Officeworks and stick one to your jacket as you enter as a reward for being a good boy. Much trendier than an elephant stamp. ;)

I have an idea, but someone needs to get very busy this weekend. Print up a few million cheapie t-shirts with the logo and "I've got it" and the gov can give to anyone who downloads. Could start a fashion trend.
