I did research this a fair bit and I decided I was happy to:

One big flaw.In the last couple of days a case from the North West who is meant to be in home quarantine somehow managed to get out and visit Launceston.Paid a visit to a couple of staff at LGH and then went to a coffee shop.It is said he did not have the app downloaded. And yes this idiot is a health care worker.
So for the app to work it must be compulsory for all who test positive.

And there are those out there who advocate for home quarantine, rather than being kept in a hotel. Either way, some that just can’t be trusted.

Home quarantine is fine, but there should be some sort of monitoring/surveillance

Having a few neurons that connect would probably help this HCW I think 🙄

And, when entering the restaurant, we can throw in the mandatory DYKWIA.

Aargh, you have hit on the only real objection to the app.

Now they will have reason for putting the damn thing on the table.

Worse still they might even use it in the restaurant so we can all know what good citizens they are.

I tried to download to my phone, but it's too old. Next thing it turned up on my tablet, but I hadn't downloaded it there. No point, my tablet doesn't leave the house.
Well, now you will need a backpack, or some such, to carry that iPad whenever you leave the house so as to facilitate any “handshake”. 😀

A little OT but many years ago we had a women who came in to have a blood sample taken and she told the nurse that the doctor told her she had a very rare disease and only had one neuron. You wouldn't be able to do that now because she'd google it

I thought about this comment over night. Why does it need a Sales effort? Isn’t it enough for us as a community to want to help all the people who are currently out of work to get jobs back?

It does not matter if we are like 'yanks' or anyone else for that matter. The government is not getting anywhere near the traction they need for this app. Attempting to guilt people does not affect behaviour, at least not in a good way.

The poll at the top of this thread says that about 70% will install it, but the real world reality is that only about 15% are doing so.

So, you can call it a sales effort. Or extortion. Pick a word. But at the moment, it would seem to be failing. How do you change that? Appealing to altruism is unlikely to be a winning formula.

Just knowing the app is a route to that should be enough to have us all racing to download it. It’s just an app we can delete when the mess is over.

But we don't know that it's a route to anything do we? Various vague comments have been made, but nothing along the lines of " The second we have 40%, then we'll do X". Just mights, and a few maybes.

Full page ads in the papers today.

What's the percentage of people who actually read the paper these days? And beyond that, read any ads? Anywhere? The advertising industry has worked so hard to put constant gibberish in front of us, that we now (have to) filter out half of the world.

Good point. For years I would buy a newspaper every day of the week.

That stopped more than 20 years ago, and I haven’t bought a single once since.

I dunno.. the guvment sales pitch seeks to engage a fairly broad range of intellects..diffrn't carrots for diffrn't donkeys if you will..
They could have been harder .. or softer.. but imo seem to have struck a useable middle ground.
As it is spinning out , a really good app may save all our butts, but a really good app may be a tad more invasive .. so...
we accept the limited uptake and work as many angles as we can to acquire a "critical mass" of acceptance.. and then if we have to.. make some changes to tighten the app performance.
I am in ; whatever it takes is fine by me.

One of the cygnets (early 20s) suggested that paying every young person $10 to download the app would turbocharge download rates amongst that group.
