And with just a little more googling you'll find it's common enough among non-Asian carriers too.

The CX incidents (as there were a couple highlighted in a short space of time) were the first ones that sprung to mind. Never any racist thoughts to that.

Understand and appreciate your experience in the industry ,I think people in general are too quick to offer criticism in hindsight.

It is that sort of apathy to lessons that have been learnt in the past which leads to the saying I told you so.

Thus the criticism is a fair one regardless of the circumstances.

As a rule, being ex cabin crew and all that, I know for a fact that you are not allowed to take your bags, u take humans only, even women with heels have to remove their shoes when going down the chute. So yeah, bags would hinder an evac. I totally agree with serfty.

No not apathy as I work in the industry and am fully aware of dealing with such accidents ,I am looking at it from the perspective of how people behave in such an instance .
Could you predict to me 100% your behaviour if you are involved in such a crash?

Wow how only 2 people lost their lives on this flight, considering the intensity of the fire just shows how well/lucky that most pax got out before the fire reached its peak.

An Asiana Airlines passenger jet travelling from Seoul, South Korea, crashed while landing Saturday at San Francisco International Airport, smashed into pieces and caught fire, killing at least two people and injuring more than 180 others.
Smoke billowed out of holes in the fuselage of the Boeing 777 on Saturday afternoon as firefighters rushed to douse the wreckage and passengers scrambled to safety down inflated escape chutes.
The plane’s tail, landing gear and one of its engines were ripped off.

Is there video of it occurring in any of the attachments so far???

It may just not have come out yet but i'm surprised that every airport doesn't have cameras aligned with each runway to capture evidence of what happened...

Haven't seen anything as yet, but imagine footage of the landing if it exists wouldn't be too far away.

There were two on Twitter early this morning from people driving past the airport , I will try and find
the link.

Having flown Asiana from Seoul to Sydney last week, and have 2 flights booked ex SFO to Syd via Icn next January, I had a number of friends and relatives query whether I would avoid flying Asiana now! The only thing that concerns me is that, is it just me, or is the Asiana pilot's English intelliigble? Maybe markis10, in partic., can comment as he used to communicate with the pilots...

My thoughts for all the pax and crew involved.

Still seems very down to dumb luck, sort of like the graphic footage of that crash in Afghanistan from a lucky dash board cam... There really should be several installed cameras of the runways and airport vicinity to make sure investigators have material to work with... Maybe there is, just don't hear about it much, always seems to be a lucky member of the public capturing something...

My thoughts for all the pax and crew involved.

I have my first flight on Asiana in August LAX-ICN and have another two booked for Apr 2014 CGK-ICN-IST... Was thinking of checking if the rego of that plane was one that did the LAX-ICN run at all, but apart from passing interest it doesn't mean much to me, these things will happen...

And +1

From the overhead picture on a number of news websites there appear to be three emergency chutes deployed on the port side only. The middle one just before the wing seems closer to the ground and making the slide down not too difficult.

My thoughts for all the pax and crew involved.

Listening to the tapes does raise a few questions, I was surprised they made contact with the tower twice post impact, would have thought shut down and evac was the priority given fire and fuel nearby.

I just wished they stopped showing that burnt out plane wreck on the monitors in the QF lounge over and over again- it's not what you like to see just prior to your flight! But seriously- awful to see something like that but good to hear that they got so many out there safely. Tells me that the cabin crew must have done a good job. Could it really be that the pilots did NOT? Asiana hasn't been on my personal list of airlines to avoid so far so better wait for more details...

The simple fact remains that taking belongings slows down the evacuation and hence increases the risk to others on the aircraft. Whether or not anyone was harmed in this incident is irrelevant. Those taking their belongings increased the risk to other passengers, that much has been demonstrated in other incidents. They deserve maximum criticism for increasing the risk of harm to others, regardless of outcome. Good luck in this incident does not absolve those selfish actions.

The FT thread has nearly 700 posts at this stage and links to lots of videos. At least one poster was on a plane on a runway at SFO when the accident occurred.

Looks like a passenger or 2 with luggage.

Don't want to ignite a flamewar again, as I agree that during an emergency it should be clear out as fast as humanly possible (and leave behind belongings), but this tweet has a better example (maybe they've just herded all luggage grabbers into the same spot haha)

I get grabbing what's on you or nearest to you if it contained something like your passport, but rollaways and shopping bags, you've got to be kidding...
