ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I've paid my PAYG easily without issues using the portal.

Both your annual tax liability and regular instalments (quarterly/monthly) can still be payed using credit card.

How to pay

I suspect some pages on the ATO website do not reflect this properly.

I have been paying it this way for the past month or so, mainly to obtain some extra bonus points with an Amex promo.

I rang the ATO and they confirmed they have been receiving the payments.

All really good feedback, thanks...

I have noticed the lack of information regarding the CC payment facility on the back of ATO statements - AFAIK, none of them indicate a CC payment option.

Never fear; I have been using CC payments since I became aware of the facility.

When I check payments using the ATO on line business portal the come trough on an average of 1½ business days.

I finally managed to shake the PAYG scheme due to my time overseas :)

Does mean I won't really be using this facility for another year. But it was fun!

Anybody done this recently....? And confirm payments can still be made this way...?:p
I paid my PAYG instalment with Amex a few weeks ago. Navigating the ATO website can be difficult at times but I managed to get there in the end.

I am surprised how long old stationery is used by the Tax Office that says you cannot pay one of their bills on your credit card.
Maybe the stationery printer is the last person to get told about this.
After more than a year of calling the automaton I would feel a bit lost if I did not hear that voice telling me each $50,000 has a fee of either $325 or $625 depending on which card is being used.
I write down all the receipt numbers for each line entry so there is an audit trail if the money goes to a wrong account.
Then all it gets down to is which card to use an how to re-load it quickly if the amount to be paid exceeds the credit limit.
I still have not seen a queue of folks at Westpac cashing cheques into their credit card on 21st of each month so I still gather not many are on to this for points harvesting.
Actually the teller said she only has a couple doing this that she handles each month.
We are trying the A345-500 again on Saturday night LAX-SIN thanks to this process. Last time it had 47 passengers in the 98 seats in the all J cabin.

Have just recently changed the family business onto paying tax bills on credit card.

Bonus is that we get nearly 50 days to pay the $$$ now and earn bucket loads of FF points!

The credit card cycle is the 19th of each month and we pay the ATO on the 21st.

EG: ATO December payment on the 21st of December via the website is not actually needed to be paid via the statement until the first week of FEB!!!!:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

Q about paying my tax with AMEX: I have quite a high limit on my AMEX Plat credit card but unfortunately my tax bill is even higher:shock:....Can I make a payment into my AMEX so that I can make a credit card payment to the ATO which is in excess of my normal limit? eg Can I pay 10K into my AMEX account so this extra 10K is available beyond my normal AMEX credit limit?

Yes you can. I have done this many times in the past and it does have some issues.

1. Putting your account in credit $10,000 can at times lock it. This happened to me once before (I dont really know why amex did it)

2. When you come to make the transaction which is greater than your approved credit limit it may be rejected. This has happened to me before as well. I generally ring amex first to let them know I am putting through a transaction greater than my limit so this will not occur (as the account has my limit in it plus say the extra 10,000 anyway).

The moral of the story is really to load up the card (hope it is accepted without locking - which it usually is) and then ring them so accounts can authorise the transaction larger than your credit limit.

PS - they dont like you doing this much either I might add and have said so to me before but they have always done it anyway

Thanks for that....and I assume that you get all your AMEX points due? after all, this is the aim of the whole exercise!

The most successful way of handling a Tax Bill due say on December 21st that exceeds your limit you would pay instalments 3 days prior and re-load the card over the phone using the Amex number on your card.
You can re-load your card every 3 days provided it is between Monday and Friday with the phone call and then write down the receipt number and date. You can immediately call the ATO automaton and pay out those funds.
For example if you have $45k to pay with a $30k limit you would pay some around 17th then reload to pay the rest on 21st to avoid penalties because 17th is a Friday.
This only applies to American Express direct cards.
Cobranded cards can be put into credit.

I have exceeded my annual 200K spend on Amex Charge Card so today I tried to pay ATO with Amex Credit Card only to find cannot use it - ATO only accept Amex Charge Card - damn

I paid my tax 2 days ago with my AMEX Plat credit card without any problems, and the AMEX pts have already posted.
