ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

It would seem that some members here are talking about paying seriously large amounts to ATO, not just the odd few hundred $$. I would firstly question what credit limits some members have on their cards or if they prepay to the CC before charging the ATO debt against their card ?? My recent experience with Citi VISA was they accepted a first charge of around $12K for an ATO payment then accepted the next months $40K+ charge but refused to credit any FF points to QF.

Citi stopped for me almost 2 years ago so you were lucky. It was later for Mrscove's Qantas Citi credit card.
Yes I have many credit cards and a number that have $100k limits. Some of those are now close to useless for paying ATO so I use them elsewhere.

It's not a good idea to discuss the payment of ATO to get points, with cc companies. Best to just keep reading and see what others have found.

In order to hopefully members here, another reference point: my relatively new ANZ Rewards Black, which I applied for and received in December 2014, also posted points on another ATO payment following a small tester early last week. As my credit limit is relatively low at $15K, I had to re-load the card but points showed up without a problem. Two more this payment cycle, hopefully it continues after that - whilst not as good as the Altitude card(s), still a good enough value proposition for me...

Further detail: used AMEX and received three (ANZ rewards) points, conversion to frequent flyer points upthread! Payment amount about $12K and about ten other transactions on the card, just to mix things up but very low value, maybe $70 all up for non-ATO spend!

Should consider yourself a very lucky fellow.

It has been a dodo for a good while now (??? Mar 2013).

Probably you were not here (on AFF) but it was common knowledge for some time now for most of us.

Well done for the 12K !!!

The earn rate has decreased recently; now 1.5 Altitude points/$ for the Amex and zero for the Visa. So it is not a great card for ATO payments these days.

The way points earning at the ATO is being enhanced out of existence on multiple credit cards makes me think we are heading towards end times.

Thanks for this and the other replies. I'm on Altitude not Qantas with my Westpac Black Amex so it's just not worth it any more. On a $200k spend I think I can get approx $1,600 of voucher for $2,900 worth of charges. Even after tax not really much point. Would have been before they halved the points......

I think the Citi cards with direct sweep to QF stayed alive for a considerable period following their death for those of us on Citi rewards. But eventually, inevitably, the Citi right hand talked to the left hand and the QF card died too. As 911tphil has painfully found out.

Weeell.... maybe. It really depends on what you do with the points. My Altitude points get converted to Krisflyer points. Even at this current pathetic earn rate, a $200k tax bill will net you 150k KF points, more than enough for a 1st class flight to Europe. Is that worth $2900 to you? YMMV of course but it is all a big game and for me that still works. Or it would if it was my only option; luckily it isn't. Yet.

Oooohhhh....
Now I knows why I joined this forum!
I've got 80k KF points burning a hole in my pocket and didn't really know what to do with them. And couple of hundred k in Altitude points. Can I just sweep from Altitude to KF?

Yep. That's what I did to get husband and I flights in J from Europe.

Here's what the QCU card application questions look like for an employed person.

In response to your recent request for a credit card application, please see below for documents that we require for assessment purposes:

Your last 3 payslips
3 most recent statements of each credit card/store account that you hold – regardless of how much is owing
A recent 6 month statement of each personal loan/car loan/home loan that you have as well as transaction listing from statement end date to current
A rental income statement for each property that you own that is tenanted
A 6 month statement of the savings account that your pay is deposited to and a transaction listing from statement end to current

** please ensure all statements contain name, address, balance owing and credit limit where applicable**

Kind regards,
Wow.......

And then I received a survey from Qantas CU after supplying more than 100 pages of information requested so I scanned and emailed it.

But you will only get 1 KF pt per 2 Altitude pts. I just swept 55,000 Altitude across to Kris as I couldn't see much other use for them.

I recently swept across ~600K Altitude to KF. 2 x SYD-sin-FRA-JFK-fra-sin-SYD in SQ R is what I'm going to use them (plus what I had already) for.

Woolies EDRCC paid points on ATO this month but that rate is halving shortly.

I've received no notice that I recall about the 'enhancement' (that doesn't mean much as I am shocking at missing important info these days) but I have a $12K ATO bill I should pay shortly to try and grab the last of the points. Not due for a couple of weeks but I guess as it goes on the card anyway you don't pay for another xx days.

On the bottom of the last page of my Feb Woolies card statement is notification that from the March statement the $2500 @ 1point/$/month cap and 0.5 points/$ after that comes into being.

Now to call up and cancel the card.

I did that last week.

They said I was a good customer and asked what they'd have to do to keep me.
I said fee free for life and 100k QF points. They said sorry they couldn't help me. Worth a shot though lol if you never try you never know
