ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

ANZ Black still pays (both Visa and Amex)
WBC Black Amex also does.

Can't comment on the others.

On my analysis, WBC black Amex earns more FF points than the other cards (except for those still holding the no-longer issued WBC KrisFlyer card), although ANZ black Visa earns (fewer points) at a far cheaper rate. The key is whetehr you want more ponts or better value per point.

cheers

Whats your calculation with Westpac Black Amex over ANZ Black?

I'm getting Westpac at 0.75 velocity vs Amex Black at 1.33?

I agree Burmans

My main card at the moment is the ANZ Black and my calculation is as follows

$10,000 ATO Payments
Amex = 30,000 ANZ Rewards = 10,000 SQ Points costing $145
Visa = 20,000 ANZ Rewards = 6,666 SQ Points costing $42

For me its a matter of balancing points against cost

Looking at it another way to earn 10,000 SQ points costs $145 using Amex ($10,000 spend) or on Visa $63 ($15,000 spend)

Deka,

Why dont you use CBA Diamond Amex. $10,000 ATO Payments will earn 11,111 SQ points. ( after conversion from velocity to SQ )

I don't have that card at the moment, and it seems like a time to pause the CC applications for a while.

Small point of interest with Amex Black you currently get more KF points by going though VA first with 15% bonus.

30,000 = 13333 VA + 2000 bonus = 15333va transfered to KF /1.35 = 11357 KF.

Well pointed out Eggsbenedict.

Thank you for that

CBA Diamond AMEX transfer via VA currently gets the most SQ points with current 15% promotion it's 1.27 SQ per $. After promotion it's 1.11 SQ per $ both still better than ANZ Black 1 SQ per $. Westpac does not even get a run at 0.75 SQ per $

I agree with all of that - it was just "between the lines" of my email ;)

If the points are going to Altitude, they are also likely to be more valuable going to CX rather than SQ.

Actually a combination, of course I want more points but only at the right value, generally I am adverse to "buying" points at more than a cent per point. So in choosing whether whether I use a Visa or an Amex its not the earning rate of each I compare but the delta.

E.g. as an example
10K ATO on a Visa card may give me 7.5K points at a cost of $42
10K ATO on an Amex may give me 15K points at a cost of $145

So base case is I know I can get 7.5K points for $42 which is a no-brainer ($.0056 per point). But for me the relevance is whether I then use the Amex over the Visa and get and extra 7.5K points for an additional cost of $103. The effective cost per point for these additional points is $.0137 per point which in fact I would possibly not be prepared to pay except for the fact for me its tax deductable which reduces well under a cent per point.

Of course this calc depends on your own individual circumstance (i.e. what your earn rates are, which points you are geting, e.g. SQ or QF, and tax deductability).

But my main point is for me is the evaluation criteria is "more points at the right price" not just more points or value individually.

My knowledge of CBA is zero. Does it come with a MC/Visa? If so what point earn? I have a big ( for me anyway! ) ATO bill looming approx. 50K, I Know Cove would eat it for breakfast, but for me it's big!!
With the demise of Westpac black and now NAB velocity my avenues to SQ are diminishing. I have ANZ black and I was thinking visa. I know it's not the best point earn compared to amex but I am not point hungry from ATO, as I have another avenue that harvests far more for me, I am just looking for good value.
I think my calculations are
ANZ black visa $10000 ATO= 20000 ANZ points=6666 kris @$42
ANZ black amex $10000ATO=30000ANZ points= 15333 velocity( inc bonus)=11357 Kris @ $145

4691 extra kris points for $103 represent poor value for me, but for others who are more point hungry it may be a sacrifice worth making. We are all different in what and how we value points.

So how does CBA stack up CBA fans?

CBA Diamond amex earns 3 awards point.
CBA Diamond visa/mc earns 1.25 awards point.

converting to velocity ( divide by 2 ). Definitely go for AMEX. assuming $10,000 you will earn about 12777 SQ

beware: CBA awards posted according to statement, give it about 30days. there is a chance you will miss 15% bonus points promotion.

Thanks for that. Do I assume the only way to get to SQ is via velocity?

I don't have any 'black' cards but am trying to find out what other cards will give you points for ATO payments. This thread is too long to read it all so hoping someone can quickly give me a current summary! Bankwest has just told me it doesn't give points for ATO payments with its Qantas Platinum card so that is eliminated. I have an HSBC Platinum Qantas card and ANZ QFF Platinum and other 'lesser' cards (eg NAB). Seems to be some suggestion that HSBC may credit points......

It's a changing environment. At least read the last 10 pages. I can confirm the HSBC is "cooperating"

Suggest you not phone up the banks as this tends to have less than ideal outcomes.

Working backwards is the most effective strategy for up-to-date info with the megathreads.

Yesterday I tried using Westpac Platinum Amexes (his and hers) and they both failed twice to go thru for $50k each. Then I thought I had better let Westpac know we are travelling and that we are in London. A Skype call and our two cards were back working sweetly this morning. I had not called Westpac to let them know we were travelling as we don't use their cards for anything international. Somehow they know when we try to use the credit cards in London which is probably read off the wifi address.
All done now with no issues.
