ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I always think the first million points on a credit card are the hardest. Meanwhile I am waiting on the reloading of our two US Visa cards before the end of this month. So I have to work the Australian CCs for a few days.

Put $5,000 on a family members WOW cc to pick up a final 3,750 QF points with the ATO. I can do mine in a couple of days time as I need the month to roll over. Using 2 different cards on two separate CCs gets 7,500 points for $42. It will be the last chance to do this before the bank computer gets reset to zero points earn.

I am glad the credit card companies have stopped offering the Rewards Points on money transfers like payments to the ATO, these transactions are not a "purchase".
Don't rock the boat. You'll find the occupants get sea sick very quickly especially if they've had one too many champagnes. ;)

Guys which of the following cards are goers for ATO payments ?
- ANZ Black
- NAB Premium
- Westpac Black
- Amex ultimate

I know the first three were cut/ceased but was the earn on ATO payments just reduced to a lower amount or was it cut to zero ?
Please don't tell me that from the above the best option is Amex ultimate which pay 0.5 ppd at the higher Amex rate lol

Pretty sure they are all no good.
Amex at 0.5 with the higher processing fee is not a cost effective option really. Better off saving the fee and putting it towards airfares.

Only AMEX westpac altitude black 1.5 points/$

That Westpac Black Amex gets you 0.75 Kris Miles off a 1.45% charge so you get the miles at a cost of 1.933 cents each and the miles can be warehoused to avoid expiry.
Westpac halves the points when you transfer them to your Kris miles account so you may think you are getting 1.5 Altitude points but after the smoke and mirrors it becomes 0.75 Kris miles.

And another +1 for the Krysflyer Amex!

Me too. I just booked a suite from SIN to LHR, and worked out my effective cost was $1725.50 (in amex fees) plus ~$276 taxes, vs $9037.70 if I'd paid cash for the flight.
That was using points earned at the old 1.5/$ rate, but even at the enhanced $1.25/$ rate it would have cost me another $345.

If I pay my tax payment on my credit card through the ato link would the cut off time to make the payment be before 6pm AEST or would it be anytime before midnight in my local time?

To be safe I'd complete the trade by 5.30pm AEST - this is the time our bank has advised on in the past. I believe that the RBA Interbank overnight calculations are based on AEST.

Does this work for QF points or only for Altitude/Krisflyer etc ?
My westpac black amex/visa is linked to QF

It should work on the QF card also, however that figure was 1.5 altitude points so you would only get 0.75ppd on the Amex only, if your already a Westpac customer you could look at the business rewards card which earns slightly less at 0.67ppd but you'll get charged less in fees for using a Visa

I'm looking to pay my HECS off in full before the June 1st reindex. About 9 months ago, I did my homework on the best card to use and now that is all useless.

Has anyone had any luck earning points with payments to the ATO with any of these cards (which have all recently had sign-up bonuses :)

ANZ Qantas Platinum VISA/AMEX ($0 with 75k points)
Qantas AMEX ($249 with 82.5k points)
Bankwest World MasterCard ($199 with 50k points)
Citi Signature (now infinite) ($49 with 50k points)

I am stupidly close to a 280k J class RTW and had hoped my HECS payment would get me over the line!

As far as I know, out of those cards, you can earn points for two of them :
- Qantas Amex - pays 0.5 points per dollar on Govt/ATO fees, but the 1.45% payment surcharge for ATO renders that unviable (not sure if HECS is the same)
- Bankwest World - currently 1 point, dropping to 0.66 in June (but should still pay out for ATO) - with a 0.42% surcharge that's arguably still worth it

I believe the ANZ and Citibank don't pay points on ATO spend, but I'm happy to be correct if I am wrong.
