ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Yes several years ago they did some and then about 3 years ago they cancelled cards for folks who did not have a Social Security number. Had to tell my youngest son it was a no go for him.

This thread could benefit from a wiki! EG - what cards are left that people can apply now for to ATO payments? And which cards are available for existing card holders to make ATO payments.

After having dinner with a Los Angeles based AFFer it became obvious that the Social Security Number requirement for a US points earning card seems to be absolute now. Both of us have our SSNs from our work in 1984 and it is now very difficult to get. That leaves the majority of Australians locked out.
Locally Bankwest, Westpac/St George are still working at the moment but the future does not look too rosy if the new rules on interchange fees gets going.

I have had a couple of SSN from when you could get them very easily. I have not idea where and what those numbers are now. Just wonder if it is worth searching for them, or maybe they have a use by date because they haven't been used.

GMOH your SSN is a number issued for lifetime so it never changes regardless of whether your card goes into the washing machine or worse.

Just had a little look and that was a memory lane trip, but unfortunately I haven't seen it for many years.

GMOH if you go to a Social Security Office you should be able to recover the number by proving your identity with a current passport, drivers licence and maybe a bit of other stuff like a utility account in your name. It may wipe out half a day out of your life so take something to read and don't park at a one hour parking meter.
We went to one in Los Angeles together and the person we saw had less personality than Officer Martinez with the rubber gloves at immigration. We each received a computer print out with our SSNs on it. You are supposed to memorize your number rather than carry the document around due to identity theft being possible.
Once you have your SSN you can work on getting a credit account. Once you get a credit card issued you can try getting onto the paying the fiend provided you get one that has no foreign exchange fees.

Thank you cove, of course I have all of those documents except a US utility bill. A US credit card combined with a currency fair account for people not earning in the US would be very useful for applying for US credit card and having the ability to pay it off, I would imagine thereby providing the ability to pay it off, I would imagine. Hopefully there are some other people who may benefit from your wise advice.

That costoco card is pretty good. But hard to use in Oz as don't have pin

I've been using my Citi ThankYou Premier with no problems without a pin in Australia. They just ask you to sign. It works well with Apple Pay. They honor the spend category bonuses e.g. I use it at paywave enabled parking meters in Sydney to get effectively 2 ppd at current exchange rate.
I'm thinking it will get more of a work out for spend categories outside of ATO post July when most Aussie issued cards ex Amex will not be very good points earners at all.
Been trying to get them to increase my credit limit but they will only do it by reference to my FICO score which I don't have since I don't have a SSN. Might be happy with what I've got in case Citi changes policy like Chase did as reported earlier in this thread by Cove. Have a growing points stash there I don't want to put in jeopardy.

That's great. I have not had the luck you describe. More often than not i am knocked back. No such trouble in other pin orientated countries but I often concede. I must have missed the chase thread. What happened actually?

I was referring to Cove's post #7283:
