ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I'm still earning QF points on the business choice rewards card from Westpac, and have not received anything to suggest they are cutting points earn for ato spend. I hope they forget about this card, but I'm sure it won't be long till they enhance this card too.

Earn 1 Qantas Point for every $1.50 you spend on eligible business purchases.Earn 0.5 Qantas Pointsfor every $1.50 you spend on government payments.

ATO = government payment.

thanks for the info, I just checked and still receiving at the old rate for my ato last month, points posted yesterday, looks like it won't be long then till it changes for current card holders. Might have to try RewardsPay next quarter

The new rate took effect from 2 May.

Budget night tonight. I don't think the ATO can ask for more than 38 payments to them a year from our operating business. I much preferred 12 payments a year.

Is there a daily limit to the amount you can pay to ato via cc? Like can I overpay my tax by 10k? And get back the cash at tax time? Just for the points?

$20 million is maximum transaction at one go but you can do many payments.
Overpaying the fiscal fiend may not be the greatest idea but it can work to earn points. If you overdo the number of times you overpay your taxes they could refund it to your credit card.

Many taxpayers are simply running out of credit cards that work well paying the ATO so we are getting close to the RBA changes commencing on July 1st.

Just did my first Citi US airline Redemption. Hopefully I get the points as quickly as Citi AU - just drained Prestige points account - transfer took 3 days.
Hoping it will continue working for my ATO. With the $A down at 73c regretting not pre-emptively buying my currency for this month's payment.

If you could prepay your home loan instead (offset) and get a return of 4.5% or so, you would have to get your refund back from the ATO in less than 50 days to come out in front (assuming you are getting a 1% payback on your credit card spend, and then a 0.4% credit card fee).

As far as I can tell, the Bank of Melbourne Amplify Platinum is still earning points on ATO payments. (My last statement with ATO payment and points was April. The wording in the T&Cs didn't change with the May update... so "government charges" are still officially ineligible. I'll try to post an update when my next statement arrives.)

Just be aware that the card team at BoM seems to be among the most incompetent on the planet.

This morning in London I ran up 0.66 QF points per dollar on a BAS that was due on 21st May. I love how you can travel and keep up with bill paying from anywhere in the world. Getting points for around 0.81 cents each is still pretty sweet as I booked some tickets on QF for business suites using points to go coast to coast.

Hey Cove,
Currently in Brighton and just did the same with the ATO and a few other bills. I used the W/PAC KF Amex for 1.25 miles per dollar. I love This card!

Yes Mitch_W I had already paid about 80% on our WBC Kris Flyer Amex before leaving Perth. Great card for earning Suites rides on SQ.
For anyone who doesn't have this CC then you could buy Avianca Life Miles on their current offer.

Forgive me for not reading all the pages but I dont have the attention span for 740 pages.

So. If you had a $120K personal income tax debt, not company, can you pay it via credit card to get points? If so, what credit card would you suggest?

I have the $ in the bank to cover the debt and current credit card limits would make this possible so moving funds around to pay for it isnt an issue.

Any advise and many thanks,

Yes you can, but you can't claim the credit card fee as a deductible (but don't take the internet's word for it, talk to your accountant).
