ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I won't be holding over any ATO payments but there might be a couple of nutters who think they can do just that in WA.
We are one country that is proving very hard to govern.
There are rumours about new taxes for WA coming in the new State budget and right now that will not help the economy.
Meanwhile I have selected which CCs to use for August.

Data point re ATO counting towards min spend on a new card. I have called up a few cards to clarify and been told variously that yes, ATO does count to min spend, but will not get points. So, best check each card and get ref number for the advice.

Well GMOH I have not been that desperate to get a minimum spend on a new CC over the line. You could get some Woolies or Coles discounted gift cards as a better option unless Costco, Aldi and IGA are your favourite retailers.

Not sure it being desperate, but rather a better use for people depending what the cards are and how they value points at different airlines.

For example the qualifying card may only earn say 0.5 point per $ displacing 3 Amex MR points /$ that would be earnt on such spend.

Also if that earnt point is a 0.5 QFF point displacing 3 Amex MR Points that in my case I would use for 3 Kris flyer Points then the equation is even worse as I value KF points at about double what a QF point is worth to me.

Personally I would not use low point earning cards to displace spend on a high point earning card. For Qualifying spend I will use on VISA/MC spend
that I cannot use VISA1 Cards on (ie exact amounts that cannot be split like VicRaods Registration Fees). If I did not have enough of such I would certainly consider ATO spend even if sans-points as I would still effectively earn more points by not displacing 3MR Points per$ spend.

It is always interesting LTO to see what are our no go zones. I must admit I was capped out on an ATO credit card a few years ago so I earned zip by going over the cap. I upgraded the card to get an uncapped card.

I just used 2 Kris Miles CCs and two QFpoints earning CCs today so that was quick and easy and all done.

Hi and hoping for some advise.

Have a $150K personal tax bill coming and have the cash in the bank so whatever we pay on credit cards (thinking monthly part payments to max points as some cards are capped) will be immediately paid off/transferred.

Current credit cards are:
ANZ Visa Rewards (already linked to Velocity account)
NAB Visa Velocity Frequent Flyer card
NAB AMEX Velocity Frequent Flyer card
Virgin Global Wallet
Virgin Visa Money Velocity High Flyer card

What would you do or is there another card we should apply for to max our situation?

thanks!

So it will earn Flybuy points, which I can transfer to a airline program?

Flybuys can be transferred to Etihad or velocity. Velocity has a limit per year which I don't know off the top of my head. Transfer happens instantly as well.

I load them up and wait for a 15% bonus making the points earn 1:1$

The Fly Buys to Velocity annual transfer limit works out to approx 60k Velocity points (69k with 15% bonus).

I had many in excess of this built up from Coles MCGC targeted offers (haven't been targeted anymore) and got offered to move them all across a few months ago even though I'd already reach my annual transfer cap so you might get a chance to move them across.

Just be aware that Coles MC will freeze your account of you put your card into significant credit. I've spread out my payments over time by maxing out then re-loading overnight by BPay.

I am so clumsy. I have a tax bill to pay and knowing my luck I will put the decimal place in the wrong spot. If I am so careless, is it straight forward to get a refund issued for the difference?

Smart one Jessica! Do you have a good CC to pay the fiscal fiend?
I haven't overpaid for a couple of years.... it used to take a couple of weeks back then.

I started my payment plan today. Mrs QF WP's tax bill paid by the only card I can use (Amex Reserve) and payment transferred already to Amex to cover it. Rinse and repeat for the next 2 days for my bill.

I noticed when you log in via auskey there is a button to request a refund, unsure of the time lines though

I've been "clumsy" on occasion - money refunded to account ATO have on file - took about 6 weeks as they waited till the next month's PAYG statement to see how much less they'd have to refund. Nuisance, really, as I was hoping to be clumsy a second month in a row,

My 3 payments are made (totalling over $30K) and our 2016 tax paid. Now to get back to refunds :D

Now just waiting on the payments to clear through my Amex and see my points balance rise
