ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I remember needing to get a refund after an actual real mistake of accidentally paying twice. It seemed to take forever.

have done the clumsy overpay also.............. took 3 phone calls and then requested a cheque for the repayment. you don't want them paying back into your CC

I am so clumsy. I have a tax bill to pay and knowing my luck I will put the decimal place in the wrong spot. If I am so careless, is it straight forward to get a refund issued for the difference?

I am currently waiting for a refund from an overpayment. (Genuine mistake on my behalf, not chasing points on this one). Just about to hit week six in the wait. The ATO seems to have a 30 day "service standard" they like to meet. After a few calls, and progressively having the refund request given higher priority, the ATO are still unable to explain the delay. So the ATO themselves have suggested I lodge a complaint, to try to expedite the refund. Which I have now done, so we will see if it makes a difference.

Given (1) the time spent talking to the ATO, (2) that feeling of frustration/helplessness talking to a bureaucracy, and (3) the fact that the overpayment (originally funded from the interest free period on my credit card but now being funded from my home loan) is now stinging me with a larger interest bill on my home loan, getting the decimal place wrong may not be as good a mistake as it could be.

The game just gets harder and harder....I have been playing it for 6 1/2 years now...about to switch to yet another card (mentioned upthread) :)

kpc I had Virgin High Flyer say NO to a new card and then Amex said no to a limit increase on a Platinum card.
In both cases I was a bit over $100,000 in combined credit limits with them so they both thought that was enough.
Fortunately both cards are quite useless or too expensive for this ATO thread so I am relaxed about the knock backs.
This ATO is still one of my largest sources of points and miles for flying and it has been on for 8.5 years.
I do hope you can renew your love for Qantas kpc. The upgrade fairy is still working hard.

To fix my American Express issue all I did was re-allocate the total $103,000 of credit limits between Ultimate and Platinum Edge. I am not desperate so there is no way that I would use either of Ultimate or Platinum Edge to pay the ATO as points/Miles at 2.9 cents is way beyond the pain barrier. Amex would be buying those points for a low 1 cent and change figure so it would be highly profitable for them to charge you 2.9 cents each.

With the new AMEX Business Explorer credit card, you get a 50,000-point loyalty bonus each year if you hit $100k of spending. So although ATO payments earn only 0.5 points per dollar with this card, if that spending helps you hit $100k, the 50,000 extra points can be worth it.

You can read my full card review here: Get 100,000 bonus points with the AMEX Explorer Business Card

:)
That one looks good. Does having other Amex card in personal names negate the $100K sign on bonus, or is the card in a business name and considered to be a new Amex customer?

My 3 payments are made (totalling over $30K) and our 2016 tax paid. Now to get back to refunds :D

Now just waiting on the payments to clear through my Amex and see my points balance rise

Our 2016 taxes is paid and my point balance has risen nicely. Lovely to receive 16K points Amex MR (even at 0.5) for something that I needed to do. Now to wait for the next 15% VA offer to switch to VA points. That should go a long way to my next VA upgrade

Today I was surveyed by American Express so I took the opportunity to tell them that charging 2.9 cents for a point off ATO spend was unconscionable.

I feel confident that they have an IGNORE BUTTON for handling ATO matters seeing they are making much more than double their cost each time someone uses one of their cards now.

I think if you're going to use Amex to pay ATO and get 0.5ppd might as well pay a little more surcharge via reward pay and get full point earn

Unfortunately you aren't eligible for the sign-up bonus if you hold a personal AMEX card. It's weird logic, I know, since every accountant will tell you to keep your personal and business expenses on separate cards and so you really need two as a business owner.

Saying goodbye to an old friend tonight (before it is enhanced on Oct 1) by smashing the limit on the card by reloading and reloading :(

Good thinking Doctor Reload. I never bothered getting that one as I have my +1 thinking the way we are flying works for the two of us.

It is a credit card (friend) where the earn rate is dropping on October 1st. I am mainly on Kris Miles from ATO as higher classes of redemptions are available.
